Why Identi.ca needs to look further afield than open source

There's been a lot of buzz in the Twittersphere this morning - well, when Twitter behaves, that is - about a new Twitter-like service, Identi.ca. Launched yesterday, Identi.ca takes the Twitter idea and open sources it, and that alone makes it worth keeping an eye on not just because we can soon expect a world full of Identi.ca installations, but also because it means that business will be able to take the code and run it behind the firewall, finally bringing Twitter-like ambient intimacy to enterprise. CIRA to boost privacy of dot-ca registrants

The personal information of Canadians who register dot-ca website domain names will be kept secret under new privacy regulations enacted yesterday. However, the Canadian Internet Registration Authority - the organization that manages Canada's dot-ca registry - is already facing criticism from observers who say the policy provides a back door to access sensitive information in certain cases. Previously, whatever personal information was attached to a registered dot-ca domain name was publicly available. Now only the data attached to corporate registrants will remain public. But under certain circumstances - including police requests or in cases involving intellectual property disputes - an individual's personal data may be disclosed after a request is made.
