Best Buy Canada to Launch Standalone Mobile Stores

Best Buy Canada Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Richfield, Minn.-based Best Buy Co. Inc., will be launching new standalone Best Buy Mobile stores located in shopping centers across Canada. The new Best Buy Mobile stores will sell mobile phones, plans, accessories and related items--a new format for Best Buy. The first stores will be constructed in the greater Toronto area and are slated to open before the 2008 holiday season. Best Buy Mobile will carry all Canadian networks. Best Buy Mobile expansion plans also include upgrading the mobile sections of select Best Buy stores across Canada for the Best Buy Mobile store-within-a-store concept. This new section within Best Buy's current retail stores will offer more selection, have dedicated team members, and a no-pressure, non-commissioned sales environment.

On Monday, we reported on the Wii Fit shortage. But believe it or not, the actual Wii console is still in short supply, a year and a half after its release. If you're like us, you figured that after the holiday season the overwhelming demand for the Nintendo Wii would finally let up and you'd finally be able to buy the console easily online and in stores. However, the Wii is still essentially sold out online; we couldn't find the console available to buy from major retailers like Amazon.com, Best Buy, and Circuit City. We did find a few places where you could buy a Wii, but they required you to buy an expensive bundle, like GameStop's $400 bundle or Wal-Mart's $500 bundle. According to Wii Tracker.com, you can't buy a Wii online for less than $390.

HSM has won two 'Best Buy' awards from What To Buy For Business. Vudu cast on Best Buy shelves

Vudu has scored shelf space at 24 Best Buy California outlets, marking its first distribution in bricks-and-mortar stores. Since its fall 2007 launch, the device, which beams films directly to TV sets without the use of a computer, has been limited to such online retailers as its own Vudu.com Web site and Amazon.com. Vudu’s site lists the exact Best Buy outlets offering the product in-store. Vudu management declined to discuss the test and a Best Buy spokesman did not comment by press time. Vudu has 5,500 movie titles available, with 1,000 TV episodes and 150 high-definition films.

SunTrust Robinson Humphrey is out with a research note intraday suggesting that investors continue to buy shares of GameStop (NYSE: GME). Best Buy Co. has completed a deal to reach the European mobile phone market with The Carphone Warehouse Group PLC. Best Buy paid Carphone $2.1 billion for a 50% share of the new business. Carphone put up its existing retail and mobile service businesses in Europe as its share. Carphone investors approved the transaction on Monday.
