Breathing Space: How Allergies Shape Our Lives and Landscapes. By Gregg Mitman. New Haven and London: Yale University Press, 2007. xv + 312 pp. Illustrations, notes, and index. Cloth $30.00. In this groundbreaking work, Mitman explores how the ecology of disease is a force of human and natural history that leaves its mark not only on the landscape, but also on the human body. The story of "hay fever" is also the story of the development of nature tourism, urban planning, and the postwar pharmaceutical boom. Americans seeking relief have changed where they live, what they build their homes with, what they buy, what activities they participate in, and even the chemistry of their own bodies.

In recent years, toy robots have become popular playthings for kids and kids-at-heart alike. Thanks to recent developments in robotics and computer technology, they are almost like having a living, breathing pet (albeit it a slightly deranged one). WowWee is one of the leading manufacturers of robot-centric toys, with something to suit all tastes and ages. Its new generation of mechanical companions includes innovative creations that walk, talk, crawl, fly and, err, purr. For an inside look at some of the latest models off the robot assembly line, check out the following slideshow. The Tri-Bot is the latest member of WowWee’s popular Robosapien series of robotic companions. Like its stable mate, Mr Personality, the Tri-Bot has been designed with fun and charisma in mind.

Talk about dedication! Volunteers in Russia are testing the ability of humans to breathe argon-enriched air, as part of a research program that simulates a manned trip to Mars. Researchers want to know if humans can survive breathing air similar to that found on Mars. Of the experiment one Russian scientist said, "Our experiments show that argon combined with the right portion of oxygen is safe for humans. I tested it on myself and I'm OK, and volunteers are also doing fine." Somehow, I'm not convinced about the rationale and safety of this test. This is preliminary research for the Russian Mars 500 project, which will simulate a manned Mars mission next year.

(RTTNews) - Drug maker Pfizer Inc. (PFE) said Wednesday that it has agreed to settle substantially all patent litigations that involve its blockbuster cholesterol drug Lipitor with Indian generics manufacturer Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd. (RBXLF.PK). The agreement would provide Pfizer with breathing space to develop newer drugs and would delay the entry of a generic version of Lipitor into the U.S. market by another twenty months, as Ranbaxy will have a license to sell generic versions of Lipitor and Caduet in the U.S. only effective November 30, 2011. Following the announcement, Pfizer's stock is currently up more than 2% in the regular trading session.

For three weeks, 23 volunteers spent time helping NASA test a new life support system for the spacecraft that will replace the shuttle. Five volunteers at a time would squeeze into a special room the size of a walk-in closet for eight hours. Sweating and heavy breathing was encouraged, as scientists at Johnson Space Center wanted to measure the amount of moisture and carbon dioxide absorbed by a new system designed to control carbon dioxide and humidity inside a crew capsule in order to make air breathable and living space more comfortable. The tests took place from April 14 to May 1 of this year and are some of the first to use human subjects in support of NASA's Orion crew capsule, Altair lunar lander and lunar rovers.

NASA's X-43A or Hyper-X air vehicle achieved a record-breaking speed of close to Mach 10 (12,000km/hr or 7,000mph) in a test flight in November 2004, which was the culmination of a three-flight test program. Hyper-X is an experimental hypersonic flight research program managed by the NASA Langley Center at Hampton, Virginia. The purpose of the program is to develop a hypersonic air vehicle powered by an air-breathing engine. Hypersonic speed is defined as speed above Mach 5 or above five times the speed of sound.

Geeks are Sexy writes "ITSecurity.com has a nice piece this week on how wiretapping works and how you can protect yourself from people who wants to snoop into your life. From the article 'Even if you aren't involved in a criminal case or illegal operation, it's incredibly easy to set up a wiretap or surveillance system on any type of phone. Don't be surprised to learn that virtually anyone could be spying on you for any reason.'" Maybe I'm on the wrong track here, but I guess I assumed that wiretapping now happened in secret rooms at the telco, and not by affixing something physically to a wire in your home, but I'll definitely be aware next time I hear a stranger breathing next time I'm stuck on hold.
