book: search
Google now offers a book search API which allows other sites to embed book previews, query for certain book information, or just link to books at Book Search (the former Google Print). In Google’s blog post announcing this, Google mentions they already partnered with several online book sites who use their widget-style preview functionality – like this BooksaMillion.com page which shows a “Google preview” button. Clicking the button opens a box which lets you page through parts of the book, search, and zoom.

cgjherr writes "If the recent financial meltdown has left you wondering, 'When does exponential decay function stop?' then I have the book for you. Advanced Excel for Scientific Data Analysis is the kind of book that only comes along every twenty years. A tome so densely packed with scientific and mathematical formulas that it almost dares you to try and understand it all. A "For Dummies" book starts with a gentle introduction to the technology. This is more like a "for Mentats" book. It assumes that you know Excel very well. The first chapter alone will have you in awe as you see the author turn the lowly Excel into something that rivals Mathematica using VBA, brains, and a heaping helping of fortitude." Read on for the rest of Jack's review.

This book comprises 20 individually authored chapters covering a range of topics in alkaloid chemistry and biology. Most of the chapters, the titles of which are available at http://www.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-3527315217,descCd-tableOfContents.html, have fairly up-to-date references through about 2006. The book is further organized into three main sections: (I) Bioactive Alkaloids: Structure and Biology; (II) New Trends in Alkaloid Isolation and Structure Elucidation; and (III) New Trends in Alkaloid Synthesis and Biosynthesis.

This book covers many different aspects of protein modeling and is just one volume in an extremely large series (over 500 volumes published or planned). It contains 19 chapters, which are organized into six parts: (I) Methodology, (II) Free Energy Calculations, (III) Molecular Modeling of Membrane Proteins, (IV) Protein Structure Determination, (V) Conformational Change, and (VI) Applications to Drug Design. The main weakness of the book, as is frequently true for such edited volumes, is that the quality of the individual chapters is quite uneven. Some aspects of molecular modeling of proteins are quite well covered, whereas others are covered too briefly, with many important aspects being completely absent.

If you need a Christmas gift for an insomniac geek, look no further. This book is clearly the product of an extremely well-informed and thorough blogger, Mary Jo Foley, who has been following the fortunes of Microsoft and its key players for many years. She clearly knows a great deal of what goes on behind the scenes in Redmond and presents a plethora of facts about roles within the organisation and details of products. There are dozens of named individuals in Microsoft 2.0 but the book gives no real insight into the personalities and motivation of those who will run Microsoft now that Bill Gates has retired to spend more time with his billions.

The physical interactions of DNA with polymers and surfactants are of interest due to the potential benefits in biotechnology and the use of DNA as a building block in self-assembled structures. Although the book contains information about the characterization of cationic polymers and lipids as nonviral gene delivery vehicles, at its core it focuses primarily on the physical interaction and modeling of DNA with small molecules, polymers, surfactants, and with itself. In particular, this book begins with an investigation of DNA as a polyelectrolyte and a description of its biophysical properties in solution and as a single molecule. The interaction of DNA with surfactants, cationic polymers, and lipids is covered next, with the focus first being on single molecule models and then on interactions in solution.

Doris Lessing once declared that "fiction makes a better job of the truth" than straightforward reminiscence, and while that might well be true of her celebrated and semi-autobiographical Martha Quest novels, it's an observation that doesn't apply at all to her latest book, "Alfred & Emily," an intriguing work that is half fiction, half memoir. The sketchy, insubstantial first half of the book imagines what her parents' lives might have been like if World War I had never occurred. The potent and harrowing second half recounts the real life story of her parents, and the incalculable ways in which the war fractured their dreams and psyches and left them stranded in the bush in Africa, eking out a meager existence on a tiny farm in Rhodesia.

Sonys nifty Reader Digital Book had one drawback when it launched in Canada in April of this year: it was only compatible with eBooks sold through Sonys own Website, which included a healthy, albeit not overwhelming, list of 40,000 titles. With the next-generation version and software update, however, the Digital Book will carry support for the EPUB International Digital Publishing Forums XM-based standard format, opening it up to tons more titles.
