Jesper Johansson, co-author of Windows Vista Security: Securing Vista Against Malicious Attacks, recently wrote an article in The Register which dissects a new type of threat. Anyone with a blog has probably seen blog spam- comments made on blog posts which have little or nothing to do with the actual blog post, but contain links to spam-related web sites. I have spam filters in place, so I rarely even see the blog spam posts. They are an annoyance, and I simply delete them in periodic batches. However, Jesper did stop to look at the spam and noticed that a new breed was becoming prevalent. The new breed, rather than just leading to some annoying spam site, are actually malware attacks. For a complete breakdown of the threat, and Jesper's dissection and analysis, check out Anatomy of a Malware Scam.

imageThe past year has seen a surprising amount of activity in the area of blog commenting systems, as companies like Disqus and Intense Debate have looked to improve upon the standard old system of leaving comments… Now comes word that Automattic, the company that commercializes the Wordpress platform, has acquired Intense Debate for an unspecified sum. In a blog post, Intense Debate CTO Jon Fox explains that the platform will still work just fine on other blog systems (Movable Type, Tumblr, etc.) but that there will now be tighter integration between it and some of Automattic’s other owned systems, like anti-spam tool Akismet and Gravatar (avatars for blog comments). Intense Debate hasn’t announced any major funding (though Disqus raised $500k earlier this year from various investors including Union Square).

Those of you who track this blog will have noticed a couple of things over the last while: First and not least, I haven’t been posting much and secondly the title has changed from Roads to SOA to FinanceTech Directions. The two changes are closely related as after some lengthy discussions with my friends at ebizq, I have decided to relaunch this blog. However, it will now focus exclusively on the financial services industry and broaden its scope to include all of enterprise infrastructure as it applies to that industry.

Om Malik’s blog network Giga Omni Media has made its second acquisition… it has acquired The Apple Blog, which exclusively covers one of the blogosphere’s favorite companies. The deal comes not long after the acquisition of mobile-focused site jkOnTheRun. Terms of the deal, which should probably be described as an acq-hire, were not disclosed. The site is edited by Josh Pigford, who started it back in 2004. The acquisition follows closely on the news that Om would give up the CEO job and take a position as a partner at True Ventures, the VC firm with an investment in his network. In that announcement, he said that adding new blogs was a key part of the plan going forward.

It happens to everyone at some point in time. You have a great idea for a blog, on a new niche topic. You create the blog; you post interesting and creative posts to it each day, and then nothing.

I have enjoyed the WordPress format immensely and this new version of the "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb" blog will implement the WordPress tools on my own server. This move cost me a pretty penny, but it was worth every dime I am spending on it to make it happen. You'll notice the new blog has some ads from sponsors on it which is something WordPress did not allow me to do on their format. I appreciate your continued support of those who support the work I am doing.

On one hand some blog networks are retrenching a bit, while a few others are expanding, or at least preparing for the long winter ahead: GigaOmni Media, the parent of GigaOm and NewTeeVee B2B blog network, has raised $4.5 million in a new third round of funding. The round was led by Alloy Ventures, and previous investor True Ventures also participated in the round. It has raised slightly above $6.5 million in its three rounds till now. Founder Om Malik recently joined True as a venture partner, part of his professed attempt to pull back from the daily grind at the blog media company. The company says it will use the money to “enhance our technology platform and content offerings, add to our current portfolio of publications and expand our Events and Briefings businesses.

Before I decided to write this blog I asked myself do we really need another career blog. Of course, I answered that question in the affirmative. There are actually several career blogs that I like and many others that seem to simply recycle shopworn -- or even worse, offer down right bad -- advice. In future blog posts I will offer my thoughts on the good, the bad and the ugly in terms of career blogs.
