This close-up view here represents the immediate vicinity of the black hole, with the event horizon depicted as a black sphere. The surrounding disk of gas, represented by white and blue rings, whirls around the black hole. The white column over the pole of the black hole represents a jet of gas being ejected from the vicinity of the black hole at nearly the speed of light. NASA [View Larger Image]

An anonymous reader writes "Two separate Apple security talks have been nixed at the last minute from next week's Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas. The Washington Post's Security Fix blog reports that Apple researcher Charles Edge was to present on flaws in Apple's FileVault encryption plan, but asked Black Hat to cancel the talk, citing confidentiality agreements with Apple. Then on Friday, Apple pulled its security engineering team out of a planned public discussion on the company's security practices — which would have been a first for Apple. 'Marketing got wind of it, and nobody at Apple is ever allowed to speak publicly about anything without marketing approval,' a Black Hat spokesman said."

Although CNET did not review the 40-inch Sony KDL-40Z4100?b (black), we did review the 46-inch Sony KDL-46Z4100/B (black). Judging from their spec sheets, the two Sony front-panel LCDs are basically identical but for screen size, so we expect the review of the 46-inch model to give a good indication of how the 40-inch model will perform. For more information, refer to the full review of the Sony KDL-46Z4100/B (black).

Black holes are sometimes huge cosmic beasts, billions of times the mass of our sun, and sometimes petite with just a few times the sun's mass. But do black holes also come in size medium? A new study suggests that, for the most part, the answer is no.

So... the House of Representatives has apologized for the enslavement and dehumanizing of African peoples in America and the vicious inequality of Jim Crow. Â Wow. Â I'm not sure what to think. Â I could certainly dovetail into Rep. Steve Cohen's obvious agenda to win votes in his predominately black district in Tennessee on August 7 over his high-profile black running mate Nikki Tinker, or that last year Cohen wanted to become the first white member of the Congressional Black Caucus, but I won't. Â The apology has been approved, Cohen spearheaded, and let's talk about that.Â

O.J. Simpson has been convicted in Las Vegas for robbery and that's a shame. I'll admit: I thought O.J. was guilty of murdering his wife and her alleged coke-pal Ron Goldman. And if he didn't do it, I was certain he hired some other person or persons to do it. And yes, I was one of those black people who was outraged that so many black people celebrated when he was acquitted in 1995. I understood the legacy of black men being falsely accused and how that's trapped in some of ours collective racial memories, but I knew O.J. had a rep for being misogynist, abusive to women and that he rolled with some well-spoken gangster-types, so celebrating his 1995 acquittal was out of the question.
