The US Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded nGimat a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I to develop electrode nanomaterials for high-performance Lithium-ion batteries that will be used to power the next generation of hybrid-electric vehicles (HEV). In the award notification the DOE stated "this project will develop a critical component of Lithium-ion batteries that will power next generation Hybrid Electric Vehicles. Automobiles powered by batteries containing this component will reduce our dependence on foreign oil, [reduce] pollution caused by harmful automobile emissions, and strengthen global competitiveness of the U.S. automobile industry".

Sanyo's just expanded their lineup of rechargeable batteries to include Cs and Ds, two sizes Jesus can't wait to get his hands on. They're rated as being rechargeable up to 1000 times, which is quite a few sessions of whatever it is you're doing with C and D batteries. There's also a new charger for these, and all of the above will be released September 12. Stock up on a few for the inevitable zombie invasion. [Sanyo]

mattnyc99 writes "There was plenty of chatter last week about an MIT announcement that researcher Angela Belcher had developed a way to create virus-based nanoscale batteries to power mini gadgets of the future. In a fascinating followup at Popular Mechanics, Belcher now says that her unpublished work includes full-scale models of the batteries themselves, and that they could power everything from cars and laptops to medical devices and wearable armor. Quoting: 'We haven't ruled out cars. That's a lot of amplification. But right now the thing is trying to make the best material possible, and if we get a really great material, then we have to think about how do you scale it.'"
