The ability to share information between batch control systems and Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) or Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems has become a critical parameter in adapting to the expanded requirements for agile manufacturing. Traditionally, batch data and execution control has been the domain of control engineers. MES and ERP Systems have lived in the information technology environment with data exchanged manually with the plant floor. This increases the chance of data entry errors and slows down access to process information needed for effective scheduling, material tracking, reporting and decision-making.

Promotion of metadata content is typically used to support movement across Development, Test, and Production environments. In SAS 9.1.3, the paper provided tools for full repository promotion and partial promotion. In SAS 9.2, these tools have been enhanced to streamline functionality and provide batch interfaces. SAS Management Console will continue to provide interfaces for full repository replication and partial promotion via the export/import framework that exists in SAS 9.1.3 with the BI Manager plug-in. In SAS 9.2, the authors have implemented a batch interface for the partial promotion framework that will allow one to create a schedulable and repeatable process for moving a set of metadata content across ones environments.

Controlling nanomaterial growth via the “specific microwave effect” can be achieved by selective heating of the chalcogenide precursor. The high polarizability of the precursor allows instantaneous activation and subsequent nucleation leading to the synthesis of CdSe and CdTe in nonmicrowave absorbing alkane solvents. Regardless of the desired size, narrow dispersity nanocrystals can be isolated in less than 3 min with high quantum efficiencies and elliptical morphologies. The reaction does not require a high temperature injection step, and the alkane solvent can be easily removed. In addition, batch-to-batch variance in size is 4.2 0.14 nm for 10 repeat experimental runs. The use of a stopped-flow reactor allows near continuous automation of the process leading to potential industrial benefits.

In the mid 1970's (about '74 or '75) a friend, Chuck Huffington, described to me a program purported to have been unleashed on the ARPAnet - a batch job whose sole purpose was to submit replicas of itself to other compatible systems (CDC Cyber's, perhaps) that it could identify on the net. The clever invention was named "Virus". According to Chuck, some SysAdmin somewhere had then written a similar program/job, the sole functions of were to replicate itself onto compatible systems, look around for instances of "Virus", evict them, and then evict itself. I was never sure at the time whether the story was true or a clever piece of science fiction, but the term "virus" was definitely in use in this context by 1975.
