Wind River and Intel collaborate on Moblin-based Linux platform

Wind River announces that it is collaborating with Intel Corporation to accelerate the Mobile Internet Device (MID) market segment. Wind River, with support from Intel, will develop an open, extensible Moblin-based Linux platform for the MID market. Furthermore, Wind River will introduce a commercial Moblin-based Linux platform specifically optimized for Intel Centrino Atom processor technology-based MIDs. Wind River Linux Platform for Mobile Internet Devices will be a full-featured, commercial-grade Linux platform that will include a Linux distribution, middleware, and mobile applications targeted to deliver rich Internet and media experiences. As part of this effort, Wind River will participate in and contribute code to Moblin.org, an open source community project where Moblin-based technologies are developed.

Linux-based device gains accelerometer-based games

Chumby Industries announced a partnership with Albino Blacksheep to provide Flash-based games for the Linux-based Chumby "alarm-clock" computer, leveraging its motion-sensing capabilities. Meanwhile, Chumby's development site is growing, providing a forum, wikis, and other information for hacking the Chumby's open-source hardware and software.

Multi-protocol wireless mesh gateway runs Debian

Zaragoza, Spain-based Libelium announced an x86-based multi-protocol mesh router with a Debian GNU/Linux-based OS and a user-extensible browser-based open source management interface. The modular "Meshlium" router targets ultra-long-range Zigbee-based sensor networks, fleet tracking with least-cost GPRS/WiFi routing, and multiprotocol WiFi/Bluetooth hotspots.

Internet-Based Realtors Win Monster Settlement

coondoggie writes "Until today, most Internet-based real-estate brokers were considered second-class citizens, and their clients were left in the cold. But perhaps that will change with today's news that the Department of Justice has reached a proposed settlement with the National Association of Realtors that requires NAR to let Internet-based residential real estate brokers compete with traditional brokers. NAR has agreed to be bound by a 10-year settlement, under whose terms NAR will repeal its anticompetitive policies and require affiliated multiple listing services to repeal their rules that were based on these policies." Nokia to manufacture Linux-based phones?

According to the Finnish business newspaper Kauppalehti, Nokia's Chief Financial Officer said Nokia is considering manufacturing Linux-based mobile phones. The article quotes Rick Simonson, Nokia's Chief Financial Officer, as saying "we are definitely moving in the direction (of Linux-based phones)" at a seminar in Boston run by JP Morgan Chase. There was no further detail though, and apparently Simonson refused to be drawn on which kind of Linux would be used. Nokia already makes the Linux-based N800 and N810 internet tablets, which use Nokia's own version of Linux called Maemo, but current tablets have no telephony ability.

At the official launch today, the company told journalists that 'Microsoft has been a longstanding supporter of Asus' to explain the price discrepancy.
