Perhaps proving that both Rock Band and Guitar Hero as capable of selling music as an iTunes or Amazon, sales of Mötley Crüe’s new single “Saints of Los Angeles” have sold five times more copies for Rock Band as it did on iTunes after a month. But sales of “Saints of Los Angeles” aren’t just an aberration: Sales of Black Tide’s “Shockwave” boast similar stats, with Rock Band’s sales trumping iTunes by ten times. “We do research on every artist we have, and the research said that the people who bought Mötley Crüe music and tickets play Rock Band and video games … (so) it was our inclination to go there,” Tenth Street CEO Allen Kovac says. Of course, Rock Band downloads are only available in the game — songs cannot be transferred to portable MP3 players.

DarkZero: The US gaming show X-play has shown Rock Band 2 being played for the first time on a recent episode of their show. Interestingly, the video showed a list of eleven songs from the games set list. Two of these songs were current DLC, and had a star beside them to signify so. The other nine however had a "2" icon beside them which seems to indicate they will be released as songs on the disc of Rock Band 2.

Neither of those tracks are from the long-awaited album Who's Next, but at least this is something, right?

Kotaku: Not that this will matter to any of you on a practical level, since we pray you won't actually pick up a copy of Guitar Hero Aerosmith, but it's good news on principle. Seems that Rock Band controllers will work with Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, with the G4TV team testing the 360 version and finding that all functions - including the whammy bar and star power - are up and running. Seeing as the problem was always at Activision's end (GH controllers would work with Harmonix's Rock Band), have they swallowed their pride and opened up the music controller market? Appears so, at least for 360 owners. Let's just hope this carries on into Guitar Hero World Tour, where it might actually matter.

So even if you don’t spring for Volume 1, keep your fingers crossed for Volume 2 - after all, you can’t stop the rock.

Metallica just doesn’t get it. (Kids, this was a heavy metal band most popular in the 80s, when we used to have what were called cassette tapes.) The band has again fanned the flames of tech hatred by asking bloggers to take down reviews after it invited those same bloggers to a “listening party” for an upcoming album. And d’oh: The reviews were positive. Double d’oh: The band apparently didn’t ask anyone to sign non-disclosure agreements, so it seems to have no legal leg to stand on.

Among folks who follow the news about copyright issues and online music, the band Metallica is rather infamous. After all, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich was the first (and most vocal) musician to come out swinging about how evil Napster was. The band was the first to sue Napster (and some universities for failing to block Napster) back in 2000. It also spent many years complaining about iTunes -- though the band eventually gave in two years ago.
