"Box Backup doesn't rely on server-initiated backups. Whenever laptops, or other clients, connect to the backup server, the backup can start immediately. You are assured that the files are secure, because Box Backup uses Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) to encrypt data straight to the backup server's disks."

Read the IDC Vendor Spotlight on Zmanda. Learn the latest user requirements, market trends and the unique role of Zmanda in bringing enterprise-scale open source backup & recovery solution to the market. Open source storage solutions have been gaining momentum over the past five years. The trend is away from tape backup and toward fixed disks for backup and archiving, in part because fixed disks provide better support for RTOs and RPOs. These trends accentuate the need for a thoughtful backup and recovery software solution. Zmanda can expect its two complementary backup and recovery solutions to grow in concert with the need for more storage, regardless of the media, as long as it maintains a competitive edge by continuously innovating and refining its offerings.

ROME and SAN FRANCISCO, August 20 /PRNewswire/ -- The public beta version of Memopal for Linux is now downloadable. This launch was timed to almost immediately follow the release of the MAC version. As such, it is part of a wider strategy, the goal of which is to make Online Backup available to as many operating systems as possible. The developers of Memopal are, in fact, already working on software for iPhones, which will be available soon. "Our goal is to make Online Backup available to anyone, regardless of which operating system, device, or language they use. We are thus not ruling out a future release of an Open Source solution or an API," said Mr. Marco Trombetti, CEO. The Linux version represents an opportunity to interface continuously with users, developers and systems engineers.

Apple this week began posting information for iPhone users intending to update their device to the new iPhone 3G. A new support document explains how to replace an original iPhone with an iPhone 3G using the same carrier: "If you follow these steps to backup your original iPhone first, and then restore the backup to your iPhone 3G, your saved SMS messages, email accounts, photos, notes, and other personal settings will be present on your iPhone 3G," the company noted. The instructions indicate that iPhone users in the US will not need to transfer their SIM card (a new one will be provided with the iPhone 3G) and describes how to transfer settings, personal info, SMS messages, and other data to the new device using iTunes' backup iPhone feature.

Picasa 2 includes a backup feature which will help you to keep your photos safe from disaster like a hard drive crash or stolen computer. Most computers these days have a DVD burner, so you can use writable DVDs to back up your pictures rather inexpensively. Of course, you can use CDs or an external hard drive or network drive as well. Since Picasa is free, there is no excuse for you not to be making regular backups of your precious photos.

One of the iPhone 3G's most inconvenient characteristics is its short battery life. After a day of usage, the thing may be too pooped to even make a call by the time evening rolls around. For on-the-go users, backup battery packs can keep an iPhone 3G humming along. However, not all battery packs do the job the same way or with the same performance, writes reviewer Eric Benderoff.
