Best Chair For Desktop Coding?

wifeoflurker writes "Can someone give me recommendations for a desk chair to give my husband as a Father's Day gift? He currently uses a cheap one he got from Office Max, but I want him to have a really comfortable one. He spends his life in this chair (coding and lurking on Slashdot). I don't have time to research good chairs on the internet today (I'm chasing my 10 month old around, and she seems to get into the most mischief when I'm staring at the computer screen), so I figured a few folks here might share their personal recommendations." Has there been any great progress in the state of the art (of sitting) since the last time readers sought recommendations for back-friendly chairs a few years back, or the perfect computer chair nearly a decade back? Is there even such a thing as a back-friendly chair, or should we all be in astronau

UCITA By the Back Door

InfoWorld's Gripelog airs a subject that should interest this community — involved as we were with efforts against UCITA back in the day. One main aim of the derailed UCITA initiative was to give software manufacturers and content owners a degree of control over users' computers. Gripelog's Ed Foster informs us that UCITA is sneaking back in, under the cover of an an anti-spyware bill, S. 1625, now making its way through the US Senate. One clause in this draft bill would legalize what the BSA calls "electronic self help" — i.e., the ability for commercial entities to cripple or disable software or networks on your computer if they believe you are violating their property rights.

Q&A: Konami's Payton, Imaizumi Look Back On Metal Gear Solid 4's Creation

Q&A: Konami's Payton, Imaizumi Look Back On Metal Gear Solid 4's Creation [06.03.08] On the eve of Metal Gear Solid's release, Gamasutra sits down with producer Ken Imaizumi and AP Ryan Payton to look back on the game's creation, its eschewing of vertical slice development, and the reality that Grand Theft Auto IV is a "hard act to follow".

Best Buy will take it back. For free. In some places.

Electronics and technology retailer Best Buy is experimenting with a free consumer electronics take-back program at 117 stores in San Francisco, Minneapolis and Baltimore/Washington, D.C. Apparently, the company was prompted by a lobbying group called As You Sow, which encouraged it to adopt the program. (As You Sow actually pretty much forced Best Buy’s hand when it submitted a shareholder requesting that it test a free take-back program. That proposal has been withdrawn.)

Zombie Napster Wants Apple Brains

Back in the day, it looked like Napster was going to bust the digital music business wide open. They were sued back to the stone age over copyright infringement, and more or less dropped from sight. Apple leaped into the breach, offering legal but locked music for their iPods through their own online store. Well, zombie Napster is back in a big way. They're now offering the world's largest library of digital music in the MP3 format for just 99 cents a track, or about 10 bucks for an album. And it's all DRM-free.

Higher Oil Prices Are Starting To Bring Jobs Home

penguin_dance notes a report up at ABC News that high oil and gas prices in the US may be moving jobs back home in a trend that some economists are calling "reverse globalization." It's becoming more and more expensive to ship finished product from other countries, so some companies are moving the manufacturing back to the US. The article hints that this trend may spill over soon to raw materials such as steel. One economist is quoted: "It's not just about labor costs anymore. Distance costs money, and when you have to shift iron ore from Brazil to China and then ship it back to Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh is looking pretty good at 40 bucks an hour."

Linus on Kernel Version Numbering

walshy007 writes "In a recent thread it was asked what it would take for an 'unstable' 2.7 development tree to be created, to which Linus replied: 'Nothing. I'm not going back to the old model. The new model is so much better that it's not even worth entertaining as a theory to go back. That said, I _am_ considering changing just the numbering. Not to go back to the old model, but because a constantly increasing minor number leads to big numbers. I'm not all that thrilled with "26" as a number: it's hard to remember. I think the time-based releases (ie the "2 weeks of merge window until -rc1, followed by roughly two months of stabilization") has been so successful that I'd prefer to skip the version numbering model too. We don't do releases based on "features" any more, so why should we do version _numbering_ based on "features"?'"

Back to the future: the Java client's second go-round

JavaOne provides a good barometer of the current fads hitting IT. Three years ago, Java discovered open source, two years ago it was AJAX, while last year was a non-event. But this year, the rich client’s back, baby.

Back in my day, we had 2D graphics and were thankful for them!

Dads like to share stories of how rough they had it when they were kids. Now there’s an exhibit proving them right, at least when it comes to video games. A vintage video-game exhibit at the McCullough-Price House in Chandler, AZ is allowing dads to show their kids just how clunky the games looked and operated back in the day. Displays also take visitors through the evolution of game consoles, from Atari to Xbox.
