Mariam writes "Free software developers from the non-profit NeoSmart Technologies have published a report detailing their experience with coding around Windows Vista's UAC limitations, including the steps they took to make their software perform system actions without requiring admin approval or UAC elevation. Their conclusion? That Windows Vista's improved security model is nothing more than a series of obstacles that in reality only make it more difficult for honest ISVs to publish working code and not actually providing any true protection from malware authors. Quoting from the post: 'Perhaps most importantly though, is the fact that Windows Vista's newly-implemented security limitations are artificial at best, easy to code around, and only there to give the impression of security.

It is with great consternation that I pen this letter after an entire working afternoon was spent at GPL, Main Street. I accompanied a family member to GPL yesterday with regards to an application for a new meter from the entity. After obtaining all the prerequisite documents, the individual was being given the "royal run around" to pay for the meter and receive the service. The applicant was told by the counter staff that the address where she previously lived owed the entity $15,000 plus and as such the applicant could not receive a meter until this amount was paid. It must be noted that the meter, where the applicant previously lived, was not in the applicant's name and the person in whose name the meter is registered is presently living at the said address and receiving electricity from GPL.

This looks like a simple seat, but it's really a robot. It's a robotic seat, to be precise. It's designed to follow you around a library, giving you somewhere to sit as you roam the aisles searching for just the right book.

Dutch designer Jelte van Geest's RFID-enabled robotic chair is for Openbare Bibliotheek Endhoven, and it's fantastic. What you do is swipe your RFID-enabled library card in front of the chair's sensor, which then follows you (or your card) around the library so you always have somewhere to sit. Once you cross a line near the checkout counter, the chair returns back to its docking station to re-juice and get ready for the next guy's ass. The video after the jump illustrates how it works. Last year, we noted the trend for various patent hoarding entities to set up a group of shell companies with which to sue companies. Part of the reason for doing so was to make it that much more difficult for the companies being sued to even know who they were fighting against. However, one big patent hoarding organization had another plan too... which just backfired. Plutus IP is a somewhat secretive patent holding company that has set up a bunch of shell companies all named after stars -- and apparently it tried to pull a little trick by shuffling patents around among the shells.
