NASA Releases Arm of Mars Lander

The robotic arm was folded on the lander's science deck to protect it from the vibrations of the launch and landing. Before Phoenix can flex its arm, it must rotate its wrist to release the latches on its forearm and elbow and "move it out in a staircase fashion" to remove its protective sleeve, said robotic arm manager Bob Bonitz of NASA's JPL.

Mars Lander's Robot Arm Shuts Down To Save Itself

Cowards Anonymous passes along a PCWorld article that begins, "The robotic arm on the Mars Lander found itself in a tough position over the weekend. After receiving instructions for a movement that would have damaged its wrist, the robotic arm recognized the problem, tried to rectify it and then shut down before it could damage itself, according to Ray Arvidson, a co-investigator for the Mars Lander's robotic arm team and a professor at Washington University in St. Louis."

Space Station's New Robotic Arm Gets a Workout

The newest robotic arm aboard the international space station went through its paces for the first time Monday as astronauts checked its operation following the installation of the Kibo lab module. Testing on the arm will continue through the summer, and plans call for it to be used in installing a porch on the module later.

Shuttle astronauts prepare robot arm for first use (AP)

Full deployment of the 33-foot arm will be done after Discovery leaves the station next week. However, it won't be used for any actual work until after the launch into orbit next year of the billion-dollar lab's third and final section — a "porch" for exterior experiments — and a second, smaller robotic arm.

Mars rover unleashes robotic arm

Washington - The Phoenix Mars Lander has released its robotic arm to begin prodding the Red Planet's surface to look for chemistry that could support life, NASA officials said Thursday. NASA officials hope the robotic arm can poke into the surface to substantiate evidence of ice or water in the northernmost areas of Mars that could have supported life. Chemical compositions can be analyzed aboard the craft and the results beamed back to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

Dean Kamen's Robot Arm Grabs More Publicity

Robot_arm Dean Kamen showed some video of the impressive, mind-controlled prosthetic robot arm he's invented today at D6 in Carlsbad, California. Kamen has been showing the arm off since early 2007, usually via video clips. But today's demonstration at D6 was impressive enough that it's got the gadget blogs and the Twitterverse all aflutter today.

Phoenix lander will flex robotic arm

The spacecraft successfully freed its 8-foot robotic arm from the restraints that kept it folded up and protected from vibrations during the launch and landing, scientists said Thursday. Preparations are now underway to partially flex the arm.
