snydeq writes "This week's Google outages left several Google Apps admins in the lurch — and many of them are second-guessing their advocacy for making the switch to hosted apps, InfoWorld reports. The outages, which affected both Gmail and Apps, 'could serve as a deterrent to some IT and business managers who might not be ready to ditch conventional software packages that are installed on their servers,' according to the article. 'If we began to experience a similar outage more than about two or three business hours per quarter, we'd probably make Google Apps and Gmail a backup solution to a locally hosted mail system, if we used it at all,' said one Apps admin. 'And it would likely be years before we'd try a cloud-based collaborative system again from any vendor.

Most iPhone users don't care that they can get a root prompt on their phone, and most wouldn't think of opening the device to a world beyond iTunes. Well, these iPhone apps aren't for most users. If you're an IT pro wanting to use the iPhone or iPod touch to monitor and control other systems, or to satisfy other geek needs, these jailbreak and native apps are for you. Cydia PwnageTool Cydia, the package manager for jailbreak apps, is the very model of a major modern manager. It's slick and quick, and it installs apps and updates faster than Apple's App Store. You do need to jailbreak your iPhone to use Cydia or any of the unofficial iPhone apps, but this is where it all starts. Free download and jailbreak instructions at blog.iphone-dev.org.

arcticstoat writes "Microsoft has said that it plans to remove a lot of the standard apps from Windows 7 in order to make the new OS 'cleaner.' Among the apps for the chop are Windows Mail, Windows Photo Gallery and Windows Movie Maker, which will no longer be included with the operating system as standard. Instead, equivalent versions of the apps will be available from Microsoft's Windows Live download service as optional free downloads, much like the new BETA versions of the apps that Windows Live offers today." Meanwhile, jammag writes that "tech pundit Mike Elgan posits that the rushed-to-market Windows 7 — due in 2010, now being beta released this October — may in fact merely be Vista with new packaging.

It's been a month since the iTunes App Store went live, and in an interview with the Wall St Journal, Steve Jobs has put the apps downloads figure at over 60 million. With the mix of free and paid apps, that brought Apple around $30 million. That's obviously encouraged Steve: he's enthusiastic that maybe "it will be a $1 billion marketplace at some point in time" adding that he's "never seen anything like this in my career for software." And in a slightly unusual candid comment, for Steve anyway, he's admitted that the apps won't be making Apple much profit—instead future sales hopes are pinned on the applications tempting people to buy more iPhones and iPod touches.

An "informed source" at Apple has told Daring Fireball's John Gruber that the mysterious iPhone app blacklist striking fear in the hearts of iPhone-toting privacy nerds everywhere actually isn't for remotely disabling apps. Nope, it's actually a CoreLocation blacklist—in other words, a list of apps not allowed to access CoreLocation (which would be why it was buried there). So actually, it's protecting your privacy by keeping naughty apps from knowing where you are. Or something like that. [Daring Fireball]

As this IDG News story points out pretty starkly, the recent outages experienced by both free and paying customers of Google Apps have forced many administrators--who were originally big cheerleaders for the cloud-based services--to rethink their strategy. Just as Google was on the cusp of becoming an enterprise alternative, it dropped the ball, and that rightly has them worried. The biggest problem is that when problems hit, Gmail and Google Apps users have no other option but to sit tight and wait.

It has come to our attention that Apple's recent changes with the App Store have actually been made to address developer misuse. Apple has rearranged the categories in its iTunes App Store, pulling aggregate categories to make room for the newest apps. This, however, doesn't include newly-updated apps.

Enderandrew writes "Our IT department has been tasked with creating a list of authorized software, and only allowing software to be added to such a list after it has been thoroughly tested. In theory that sounds like a great idea — but how should we test apps to make sure they are secure? We have tools to scan internal websites, and we use MBSA for our Windows servers. However, I'm turning to Slashdot to ask what are the best methods for creating a test environment where I can analyze apps for security vulnerabilities. We're a multi-platform shop, but my main concern is with Windows apps."
