Hong Kong, the place where you can buy anything (or have someone make a copy of anything) now has unlocked iPhones for sale. As you can see from the screenshot, these are official, direct from the Apple Store itself.

"Apple is gearing up for a music announcement [on September 9th]. The trouble is, nobody in music appears to know anything about it. My sources say that they don't expect Apple to announce anything to do with music content, and they are sure Apple won't be rolling out an iTunes music subscription service," Greg Sandoval reports for CNET.

what about writes "Apparently there is a quick, simple, and undetectable way to grab all of your cellphone data. CNet reports on the Cellular Seizure Investigation (CSI) Stick, developed for law enforcement but available to the public, which 'connects to the data/charging port and will seamlessly grab e-mails, instant messages, dialed numbers, phone books and anything else that is stored in memory. It will even retrieve deleted files that have not been overwritten. And there is no trace whatsoever that the information has been compromised, nor any risk of corruption. This may be especially troublesome for corporate employees and those that work for government agencies.' I use mobile knox, a secure storage application, for my important data, but I would be very upset if somebody grabbed my telephone list, SMS, or anything else from my lock

Over the years on this blog, I’ve written quite a few times about Ariad Pharmaceuticals and their quest to assert some rather sweeping patent rights. For background, see here and search for "Ariad" - there's a lot to read, in you're in the mood. The short version is that the company is the licensee of a patent which was issued with extremely broad claims around the NF-kappaB pathway in cells. Dozens and dozens of claims – the thing just drones on and on about compounds, methods, techniques that affect, inhibit, modulate, fill-in-your-verb anything that regulates, changes, modulates, etc. anything to do with NF-kappaB.

Ever wondered what might crawl out from under a rock on Mars? The Phoenix lander is going to attempt to find out today by trying to nudge a rock aside today with its robotic arm to see what might be underneath. Engineers have developed a plan to try moving a rock on the north side of the lander. This rock, roughly the size and shape of a VHS videotape, is called "Headless." Even though the Phoenix mission has been extended for a second time – the mission is now on through December, the team feels like it's time to pull out all the stops and do as much work as possible. "We're getting towards fall in the northern plains of Mars and our sun is dropping lower day by day," said mission principal investigator Peter Smith on NPR's Science Friday.

NewsTrust is, to quote from the site's header, "Your guide to good journalism." Specifically, NewsTrust links to stories published both by well-known media and by less-known blogs, and asks its users to rank and review those stories on accuracy, balance, context, evidence, fairness, importance, information, sources, style, and trust. It's an ambitious effort with an impressive group of advisors, that is starting to be taken very seriously by a growing number of people who follow media matters closely. Founder Fabrice Florin is reasonably impressive himself. He's been a leader in online multimedia content for many years, and if you remember the excellent mid-1980s documentary film Hackers, he's the guy who directed and produced it. Fabrice is kind of a "behind the camera guy," so there aren't a lot of interviews with him out there.

If anything's a given about the iPod, it's that the player has a solid history of handling podcasts exceptionally well. This has to do with the firmware on the device itself, but perhaps more credit should be given to the iTunes software, which makes excellent use of its integrated music store interface to aggregate, organize, and promote a wide variety of podcats--likely the widest array available in any one spot. That's great for iPod owners, but what about the rest of us? Never fear: there are plenty of solutions available.

Can anything put the wind back in eBay’s sails? The once-iconic auction site is making cosmetic changes to its fee structure and moving away from the auction model to emphasize more fixed-price listings. But it’s hard to get excited these days about eBay. It seems that the Web has moved on and eBay (EBAY) is stuck in still waters.

If you are anything like me, then websites which make heavy use of Javascript may get slightly frustrating at times, slowing down pages that would otherwise be responsive. The good news is that Mozilla has been working on some new optimization to greatly increase the performance of Firefox's Javascript engine. The optimization tactic called 'tracing' has seen performance increases of between 20 and 40 fold in some cases, and believe the work being put down will pave the way for developers to use Javascript for writing full applications. It should also increase Firefox performance in general, as a number of components and extensions are coded in Javascript. The code should see inclusion in the next update to Firefox (3.1), and it is worth noting that Apple have also been implementing performance improvements, which are due to find their wa

Ah nanotubes. Is there anything you can't almost possibly do? Well, now you can add bouncy cellphones to the list because a team of Clemson University researchers have developed a way to make beds of tiny, shock-absorbing coiled carbon nanotubes which could be used to cushion objects from damaging impacts. They hope that these coiled nanotubes could be used in everything from body armor to cellphones in the near future.

So I forgot to blog anything yesterday. Dude. I suck. The thing is, I keep thinking I'll do it when I get to work. The problem is that I just do not have the time. Not only have I been off for twelve days and am a bit underwater, but this time of year is generally crappy-busy like. Just a lot to do, even if business isn't what we'd like it to be. Just no time to slack!
