Earlier in the day today Red Hat made an announcement [1] that there had been an intrusion into some of their computer systems last week. In the same announcement they mention that some of the packages for OpenSSH on RHEL-4 ( i386 and x86_64 ) as well as RHEL-5 ( x86_64 ) were signed by the intruder. In their announcement they also clarified that they were confident that none of these, potentially compromised, packages made their way into or through RHN to client and customer machines. As a security measure a script [3] was made available along with a semi-detailed description of the issue [2]. We take security issues very seriously, and as soon as we were made aware of the situation I undertook a complete audit of the entire CentOS4/5 Build and Signing infrastructure.

Kuhrt is not surprised at the announcement of the Leipzig trade fair, which for its part will be hosting its own event next year: "It was to be expected that the Leipzig trade fair would try to keep the topic in its 2009 programme as well by announcing its date. But they will have to do it without the industry for the most part. The lead trade fair will take place in Cologne in 2009 and beyond."

That was the China iPhone 3G announcement. Macsimum New reader Brian called it correctly in his comment to Dennis Seller’s article “China Mobile to sell cut-down version of the iPhone? I don’t think so “with maybe just one mistake in his analysis.”

After the first announcement on 1997-04-27 and over eleven years of fresh start after fresh start, Duke Nukem Forever finally comes to your system. At least if your system is an Xbox 360. Jon Siegler, the webmaster of 3D Realms, confirms this on their site: "As has been reported around the net today, we can confirm that the game has indeed passed final certification with Microsoft on Friday the 15th of August (on our first try, no less). That means the game is done — it is now in the hands of Microsoft." Update: 08/19 10:47 GMT by T : Several readers have written with a correction: this announcement is actually about Duke Nukem 3D, rather than Duke Nukem Forever.

Doesn’t seem like we go more than a few weeks without a new DSLR announcement as Canon’s New EOS 50D and Nikon’s D90 steal the headlines this week. Add to this news the recent announcement of a full frame chip with enhanced megapixel count from Sony, the incredibly compact E-420 from Olympus, the new Micro 4/3 news from the latter and Panasonic (promising even more compact DSLRs) and it’s easy to see why the DSLR category has everyone in this industry buzzing lately.

It's not often Matt Drudge posts a headline about a company laying off fewer than 20 workers--especially nowadays. He did it today with Gawker Media's announcement 19 employees would be released while the company would ditch its traffic based writer bonus payments and readjust its priorities. Gawker's announcement is more important than just the 19 jobs lost because of what it says about the economy via-a-vis new media companies.

phantomflanflinger writes "As you may have heard already, Microsoft have announced their intentions to buy back $40 billion in stock from their investors, in the biggest single buy-back plan in business history. The announcement has given Microsoft shares a small gain but they still stand significantly below their level in January — before Microsoft's unsolicited bid for Yahoo!. The announcement of the plan has also created new speculation about a now-or-never deal with Yahoo!."

9 to 5 Mac proclaims that Verizon and Apple will announce in 2009 that the iPhone will be coming to Verizon. That's not particularly surprising, but keep in mind that Verizon can't technically offer the phone until 2010. AT&T and Apple's agreement was renegotiated with the launch of the iPhone 3G, and AT&T's exclusive distribution rights were extended into 2010. Verizon iPhone availability should make many customers happy, given AT&T's network coverage (broadband or otherwise) and call quality simply does not mach up in many of the two companies overlapping markets (upstate NY comes to mind).
