AMD: company split does not violate Intel patents

One day after Intel voiced concerns over patent violations, AMD has made an announcement on Thursday hoping to put them to rest. AMD previously said it will split its operations and enter into a joint manufacturing venture, prompting the worries from Intel. Intel said it would review its processor licensing agreement with AMD, though AMD maintains there is no need, as the new deal will not violate any agreements between the two. The two chipmakers currently have a deal in place that has AMD pay Intel royalties in exchange for use of its x86 chip instruction set.

AMD 45-nm CPUs to use new naming scheme?

With AMD's flagship 2.6GHz Phenom CPU using the 9950 designation, obviously AMD is running out of model numbers for their upcoming 45-nm Deneb CPUs, set to launch in Q4'08. According to Chinese site Expreview AMD plans to move to five digits for their upcoming 45-nm CPUs, starting with the 3.0GHz Phenom X4 20550 and 2.8GHz 20350 later this year. Both of these chips will rely on AMD's existing Socket AM2+ infrastructure with DDR2-1066 memory support.

AMD Says Manufacturing Deal Does Not Violate Intel Processor Patents

The day after AMD announced a significant deal that will spin off its manufacturing facilities into a new joint venture company, AMD is defending its licensing agreement with Intel. In the wake of the deal, Intel said it would review its processor licensing agreement with AMD to ensure the deal does not violate any patent agreements. An AMD spokesman said the deal does not impact the chip licensing agreement with Intel.

Leaked AMD roadmap lists Jan 8th release date for 45-nm Deneb Phenom

For months now AMD has insisted that their 45-nm manufacturing process is on track and that we'd see the first 45-nm Phenom CPUs based on AMD's "Deneb" core by the end of this year. However this leaked AMD roadmap on chw.net suggests that Deneb has been pushed back to January 8th 2009, with AMD providing two SKUs at launch, a 3.0GHz part and a 2.8GHz chip, both with 125W TDPs.

AMD: Shanghai in production, slated for Q4

AMD's first 45-nm Shanghai CPUs for servers are on track for a Q4'2008 introduction. News.com spoke with AMD's GM of the server/workstation business, Pat Patla. Patla states that Shaghai is in "full production right now in the factory", and will run 20% faster than Barcelona clock-for-clock due to IPC improvements AMD has integrated into the processor.

AMD Fusion Details Leaked

negRo_slim writes "AMD has pushed Fusion as one of the main reasons to justify its acquisition of ATI. Since then, AMD's finances have changed colors and are now deep in the red, the top management has changed, and Fusion still isn't anything AMD wants to discuss in detail. But there are always 'industry sources' and these sources have told us that Fusion is likely to be introduced as a half-node chip."

AMD spins off manufacturing

NEW YORK -- October 7, 2008 --AMD [NYSE: AMD] and the Advanced Technology Investment Company (ATIC) of Abu Dhabi today announced the creation of a U.S.-headquartered, leading-edge semiconductor manufacturing company to address growing demand for independent, leading-edge foundry production capabilities. Intel Says AMD Split Violates License Agreement

AMD and Intel are rivals in the marketplace when it comes to x86 compatible CPUs and graphics processors. AMD and Intel have a cross-license agreement in place that allow AMD to use Intel IP to build x86 compatible processors.

Intel questions AMD spinoff plan

As many of you probably know, AMD and Intel share a broad cross license agreement that covers tech such as AMD's 64-bit instruction set, Intel's MMX and SSE, and most importantly, Intel's x86 license, which allows AMD to produce x86 compatible CPUs such as Athlon and Phenom.

Intel worried patents hurt by AMD split...

Intel today said it was concerned its patents might be at risk as a result of AMD's manufacturing split. The former company licenses its x86 chip architecture and other key technologies to AMD and has "serious questions" about whether those licenses will be honored if AMD's division into design and manufacturing companies is approved, according to Intel spokesman Chuck Mulloy.

Asset smart? AMD spins off manufacturing

AMD said Tuesday that it will split off its manufacturing operations in a deal with the Advanced Technology Investment Company of Abu Dhabi. AMD will also receive a capital infusion from Mubadala Development Company, which will wind up owning more than 19 percent of Intel’s smaller rival.

AMD's OverDrive and CrossFire Come To Linux

twljagflba writes "Since last year AMD has made ATI increasingly Linux friendly by releasing 3D programming guides and helping out the open-source community. At the same time they have been continuing to develop their binary Catalyst driver for the Linux platform and most recently they delivered same-day support for their new graphics cards. Today though they have released the Catalyst 8.8 Linux driver that adds two very important features: CrossFire and OverDrive support for Linux. Linux users are now able to use CrossFire to split the rendering workload between multiple GPUs and they're also able to overclock their graphics cards now using the binary-only driver. Phoronix has a complete run-down on both features — including benchmarks — in their AMD OverDrive on Linux and ATI Radeon CrossFire On Linux articles.

Lehman Bros was critical to AMD

Mired with billions in debt as a result of their 2006 purchase of ATI, investment firm Lehman Brothers played a crucial role in AMD's survival last summer. This article from the AP discusses the impact of the financial crisis and how it could affect AMD going forward:

AMD Graphics Chips Could Last 10X To 100X Longer

An anonymous reader writes "According to a research report out of UCLA, released this morning, NVidia's high-lead bump packaging could last anywhere from 1/10th to 1/100th as long as AMD's advanced eutectic bump approach. (TG Daily has picked up the claim.) NVidia is currently in the midst of a $200M recall of bad GPUs, and the report suggests that the issue could be much deeper than NVidia's PR department would have us believe." The report lends credence to the strident claims of the Inquirer's Charlie Demerjian, which we discussed a month back.
