Flickr Video

Now the popular photo sharing site allows you to upload video clips One feature that many folks have asked for from Flickr, the popular photos sharing site, is the ability to upload short video clips along with still images. Just about any digital camera produced today allows you to also take short video clips. Flickr now allows you to upload 90 second or less clips and share them on your Flickr photostream. The idea is that with a limit of 90 seconds it is just long enough to post a clip of your child's birthday song, or a students science experiment, but not too long. The limit is set to encourage the uploading of user generated content and not the republication of exisiting video content. As with your Flickr photos, visitors can comment and link to the video, just as they can with still images.

The Loopt app: A loopy privacy dilema

Loopt has an appealing application that allows you to track your friends and allows them to track you on a graphic map. It's kind of like a GPS-sonar radar that I've just discovered on the iPhone 3G. But, is this application really more like an electronic leash? Will your significant other track you? Will moms and dads track their children this year? Yes, Loopt has an extensive privacy policy that discourages/prohibits kids under 14 years old from using the service, but even one of my most 'public' friends (both online and in off-line) was actually hesitant about installing Loopt on his iPhone 3G. Disclosing your location to a third-party seemed to bother him greatly. The thought is that if you're near a store that is having a special you may get an SMS-text bulletin or coupon.

Yahoo opens up search infrastructure to developers

The platform, available as an application programming interface, allows third parties to re-rank and control the presentation of their search results by giving those parties access to Yahoo's search infrastructure and technology. The framework also allows developers to blend search results from Yahoo's Web, news and image indexes with any other online data source.

Pushing Data to the Browser with Comet

AJAX has become so popular because it allows a browser to initiate a request to the server to receive or push data. Pushing data from the server to a client at an undetermined interval has been a problem that AJAX has never been able to deal with well. Simple examples of applications that AJAX does not handle well due to the need for server push are chat applications, live temperature updates, tailing log files, and calling long running queries. Comet can solve this problem. Comet is a web application architecture that allows a web server to send data to a browser without any need for the browser to request the data. Three common examples of allowing a server to push data to a browser are: polling, long polling, and streaming. Long polling and streaming are two strategies that are considered Comet.

Complete Kickstart: How to Save Time Installing Linux

It provides a single location to store files for installation and allows for ease of updating those files instead of dealing with multiple copies of DVDs. It also allows for very fast and hands-free installation as well as the ability to provide a menu-driven interface for selection of the desired kickstart configuration from among two or more choices."

How to Create a Search Feature with PHP and MySQL

Developing a robust, interactive and engaging Web site involves many different avenues, such as interactive pop-out menu’s using dynamic JavaScript, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), complex maps that allows visitors to rollover individual sections for detailed information, forms designed and formatted with CSS and areprogrammed to collect and send visitor feedback to a specified recipient. Other features could include: database driven pages that display a current member directory, a customized blog section that enables administrators to manage postings and allow random users in coordination with CAPTCHA techniques to post remarks to an article. Arguably, one of the most popular features of any database driven site is a searchable form feature that allows anyone to search for current staff members of an organization and find additional info

Olympus / Panasonic announce Micro Four Thirds

Olympus and Panasonic have announced a new, mirrorless format / lens mount based on (and compatible with) Four Thirds. The Micro Four Thirds system uses the same sensor size (18 x 13.5 mm) but allows slimmer cameras by removing the mirror box and optical viewfinder. The new format has three key technical differences: (1) roughly half the flange back distance (distance from mount to the sensor), (2) a smaller diameter lens mount (6 mm smaller) and (3) two additional contact points for lens-to-body communication (now 11 points). Removing the mirror mechanism allows this shorter flange back distance, meaning lenses for the new mount can be considerably smaller than current Four Thirds designs. The format will require framing to be carried out using Live View on either the LCD monitor or an EVF.

Premier Manager attempts to appeal to both younger and more casual players of the genre.

Nielsen Collects FL Tax Breaks, Then Outsources Jobs

theodp writes "The poop is hitting the fan over tax breaks given to ratings giant Nielsen Co., which pocketed millions in Florida jobs-creation tax concessions but has turned around and dismissed hundreds of local workers after inking a $1.2B outsourcing deal with Tata Consultancy Services of Mumbai. Lou Dobbs is on the case. Lou may go even more ballistic once he sees the Nielsen-Tata pact, which assures Nielsen that OT worries are a thing of the past ('there shall be no additional charge for overtime work'), allows Nielsen to have unsatisfactory Tata hires replaced within 4 weeks of starting with no charge for the original or re-performed work, gives Nielsen up to 6 man-weeks of free labor when a Tata worker is replaced, and allows Nielsen to make 'any TCS Resource' disappear with no more than 5 days notice if their presence 'is not in

Photoshop Allows Us To Alter Our Memories

Anti-Globalism writes "In an age of digital manipulation, many people believe that snapshots and family photos need no longer stand as a definitive record of what was, but instead, of what they wish it was. It used to be that photographs provided documentary evidence, and there was something sacrosanct about that, said Chris Johnson, a photography professor at California College of the Arts in the Bay Area. If you wanted to remove an ex from an old snapshot, you had to use a Bic pen or pinking shears. But in the digital age, people treat photos like mash-ups in music, combining various elements to form a more pleasing whole. What were doing, Mr. Johnson said, is fulfilling the wish that all of us have to make reality to our liking. And he is no exception.
