advertiser: search
A new study from comScore Inc. based on data from comScore’s Ad Metrix service shows that many of the largest apparel retailers are noticeably absent from top online advertiser rankings. American Apparel LLC was the top online display advertiser in the apparel category, delivering 483 million ads in April. The ads of American Apparel, No. 262 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide to Retail Web Sites, reached 48.9 million unique Internet users an average of 9.9 times during the month, according to comScore.

Back in April, we noted that some NY state politicians were trying to put in place a rather sneaky legal change that effectively would force Amazon to collect sales tax in New York, despite not having a physical presence there. The "trick" was to claim that if you had any affiliates in the state, you had a local presence. Affiliates, of course, can be nothing more than an advertiser. So, based on this change of law, effectively anyone who has an advertiser in NY is considered to have a local presence there and must collect sales tax. Both Amazon.com and Overstock have sued over this law, and Overstock has even gone so far as to cut off all NY affiliates in response (showing how the law probably hurts NYers a lot more than it helps them).

Google Inc.'s (GOOG/NASDAQ) online search advertising spending across the pond is showing signs of cracking, according to Ross Sandler, analyst at RBC Capital Markets. "Cyclical headwinds are starting to have an impact on online advertising in the mature geographies in Western Europe," Mr. Sandler said in a note to clients. "Like the U. S. market, search is holding up better than display, but given the mix of advertiser categories, some cyclical pressures in search may be more pronounced." The analyst said that search spending in the travel and finance advertiser category during the third quarter is underperforming, while search engine marketing is seeing lower conversion rates. As a result, Google's international business may not meet expectations and given the risk of disappointing growth, he advised clients to take a cautious approach

Many marketers fail at search and don't know it. The basic performance reports available from providers like Google can lead an advertiser to believe that his or her campaign is generating plenty of qualified interest, when the truth might be precisely the opposite.

This week, Google went live with yet another change to its Quality Score system that calculates whether an ad should be shown on the first SERP (define) and the frequency and position at which an ad is shown. While Google has blogged about the change, as well as e-mailed the named advertiser contact for each AdWords account, I found that the level of knowledge about this important change is highly varied in the marketplace.
