Online display ads help increase sales in stores, as do paid search ads. And when a consumer sees both display and search ads online, the impact on offline sales is greater than the sum of the two individually, according to new data from web measurement firm comScore Inc.

Apple has posted latest ads for 3G iPhone on its website. Three in number, these adverts are titled Everyone, Unslow, Work Friendly. The ads extol the speed (compared with the original iPhone’s EDGE network) and GPS facilities of the 3G device and also focus on the price reduction i.e. twice as fast, half the price. The ad titled Everyone claims that everyone would like features that work at speed and still would like to pay half the price. Next in the list is Unslow, which touts the 3G features of new iPhone and the fact that internet is ‘twice as fast’. Finally the Work Friendly focuses on the work-related features (obviously) and ends with a line: ‘It works great…with work’. Check out all the three ads after jump.

Digital revenue at the BBC’s overseas, profit-making BBC Worldwide division ballooned from £13.9 million ($27.4 million) to £21.9 million ($43.2 million) in the year to March 31, thanks to ads on the new BBC.com and to sales from the likes of iTunes and YouTube. The controversial BBC.com made £1.5 million ($2.96 million) from ads and sponsorships since its November launch. The site only runs ads outside the UK and plans to increase inventory, while ”an international commercial iPlayer functionality is being explored”, too.

For this week's Photoshop Contest, I want you to create some really honest gadget ads. You know, ads that say things companies would never actually advertise about their products, but actually give you more correct info than a real ad. Alternatively, you can make the ads brutally honest about the consumer it's aimed at. Be creative! It's fun and easy, as you can see by the Unicorn-themed PS3 ad I made above.

India unfortunately doesn't have the equivalent of section 230 of the CDA, which prevents service providers from being sued for the actions of their users. That's why Google, Microsoft and Yahoo are all facing a lawsuit over certain types of ads in India. Apparently it's illegal in India to advertise any technique or product designed to influence the sex of a child. However, such ads have been appearing on all three sites. The problem, though, is that the liability should be on those who are actually buying the advertising. They're the parties who are really breaking the law. Yet, because Google, Microsoft and Yahoo are easier targets (and have a lot more money), that's who gets targeted.

Behavioural targeting of ads is the in-thing on the internet right now. It's when an ad company serves advertisement based on a profile they have created of you. You might have noticed something similar on Facebook, which serves future-ads based on your feedback on the current ads: it's a system that learns what to serve based on your personal interest, which is in turn based on inferences drawn from either your declared personal information ('I like this band') or your actions online ('I bought this CD').

In May, Charter Communications, one of the nation's largest Internet service providers, sent letters to hundreds of thousands of its customers promising "an enhancement coming soon to your Web browsing experience." This was a heroic bit of corporate doublespeak—Charter planned to "enhance" its service by installing software on its Internet lines to scrutinize its customers' browsing habits. The company's aim: to sell lucrative ads tailored to users' interests. For instance, if Charter saw that you'd been reading lots of auto reviews, it might show you spots for new cars. The company described the plan as a benefit for users. "You will not see more ads—just ads that are more relevant to you," it said.

bullyBEEF writes "Malicious hackers are using booby-trapped Flash banner ads to hijack clipboards for use in rogue security software attacks. In the Web attacks, which affect Mac, Windows, and Linux users running Firefox, IE, and Safari, bad guys are seizing control of the machine's clipboard (probably using the Flash command setClipboard) and inserting a hard-to-delete URL that points to a fake anti-virus program. A number of legitimate sites have been seen to host acs carrying the attack — including Newsweek, Digg, and MSNBC.com. Researcher Aviv Raff offers a harmless demo of how it's done."

The first sign of the much-debated in game advertisements has now made it into City of Heroes. So far, there appears to be only one ad, a billboard-size poster advertising JETER CLUTCH sneakers. British players needn't worry about seeing this particular ad, as they won't be able to, whether they play on American servers or not. The ads are regionally targeted, so only those that are appropriate for a given audience will show up. We've not yet received any reports of what the UK players see instead, though some players have found a cached image of Statesman standing near a Union Flag.
