The European Commission wants online music stores across Europe to be fully stocked, and is eliminating certain restrictive policies imposed by royalty groups. EU regulators ordered 24 music societies across Europe to modify or ditch their agreements that bar music services from selling or broadcasting music across borders, forcing those services to set up individual storefronts for each of the EU's member states that may or may not carry all the same content. The groups have 120 days to make the changes, although the EU does not currently plan to impose fines for noncompliance.

(Nanowerk News) One of the chief difficulties in treating brain tumors involves getting potential tumor-killing drugs across the blood-brain barrier and into the brain. Now, researchers from a NCI Cancer Nanotechnology Platform Partnership at the University of Buffalo have used targeted quantum rods both to breach the blood-brain barrier and to study how such constructs move across this largely impermeable barrier. Paras Prasad, Ph.D., principal investigator of the SUNY-Buffalo Platform Partnership, led the research team that published results in the journal Bioconjugate Chemistry ("Bioconjugated Quantum Rods as Targeted Probes for Efficient Transmigration Across an in Vitro Blood-Brain Barrier").

A gigantic telescope on the Moon has been a dream of astronomers since the dawn of the space age. A lunar telescope the same size as Hubble (2.4 meters across) would be a major astronomical research tool. One as big as the largest telescope on Earth — 10.4 meters across — would see far more than any Earth-based telescope because the Moon has no atmosphere. But why stop there? In the Moon's weak gravity, it might be possible to build a telescope with a mirror as large as 50 meters across, half the length of a football field—big enough to analyze the chemistry on planets around other stars for signs of life.

Listed Australian banking and insurance company, Suncorp-Metway, is developing a Google-style search engine. The new product, which the bank has piloted over the five weeks to early May 2008, will index consumer data scattered across disparate Suncorp databases. The customer data hub will automatically update client data across all databases, and Suncorp CIO Jeff Smith claims it will allow customers to view all of their insurance and superannuation data on one account. Meanwhile, Suncorp has begun to introduce IBM's Websphere service-oriented architecture platform across its operations

Using electrical resistance measurements, researchers at the University of Minnesota, US, have discovered that electrons travelling along a molecular nanowire stop tunnelling through the wire and start "hopping" across it when the wire reaches a length of about 4 nm. This effect had been predicted before but never observed until now. The result could help in designing future molecular electronics devices.

Now, the government of Nicolas Sarkozy is trying to revive the the measure by pushing it as an amendment to the pan-European Telecoms Package.
