GNOME 2.24.0 Beta 1 (2.23.90) ============================= Oops, I did it again. This release is one day late for various reasons, including loss of battery power and laptop brokenness. There were also other unrelated things that slowed everything down but you don't want to hear about all that, do you? It's all my fault. Or maybe not. You know what, it really sounds like a conspiracy of people trying to force us to not release the first beta of GNOME 2.24.0. I even heard people talking about The Swedish Conspiracy... Hrm. Who knows? You all know what you have to do now. Go download it. Go compile it. Go test it. And go hack on it, document it, translate it, fix it. To compile GNOME 2.23.90, you can use GARNOME [1] (which supports users and has additional/different modules available), or the jhbuild [2] modulesets [3] (which use the exact

Apple's Mac OS X and the open source Linux operating systems continue to erode the install base of Microsoft's proprietary platform. According to statistics made available by Net Applications, Windows accounted for a market share of no less than 93.06% back in August 2007. One year later, and all the available versions of Windows own just 90.66% of the operating system market – a consistent drop, which places Microsoft dangerously close to the 90% milestone. In fact, by the end of 2008, the Redmond company could see Windows' share of the OS market depreciate under 90%, if the current trends continue.

Ted Samson IW writes "InfoWorld reports on an experiment in air economization, aka 'free cooling,' conducted by Intel. For 10 months, the chipmaker had 500 production servers, working at 90 percent utilization, cooled almost exclusively by outside air at a facility in New Mexico. Only when the temperature exceeded 90 degrees Fahrenheit did they crank on some artificial air conditioning. Intel did very little to address air-born contaminants and dust, and nothing at all to deal with fluctuating humidity. The result: a slightly higher failure rate — around 0.6 percent more — among the air-cooled servers compared to those in the company's main datacenter — and a potential savings of $2.87 million per year in a 10MW datacenter using free cooling over traditional cooling.
