Sony has released a new e-book reader for its Reader lineup: the PRS-700. Sony's PRS-700 e-book reader borrows some iPhone innovations, such as a touchscreen display. Sony says its PRS-700 e-book reader makes it possible to read e-books in bright sunlight. The PRS-700 also offers a built-in LED reading light and supports multiple formats.

At a New York press conference Thursday evening, Sony introduced a new version of its e-book reader. The Sony Reader PRS 700 will begin shipping in November and will be priced at $399. Among the most significant upgrades is a new touch screen that allows readers to select their reading choice by touching an icon on the screen and also lets readers turn pages by swiping their fingers across the screen. The 700 also has an advanced search function and new note-taking capabilities, and a reading light has been added. With additional storage capacity, the 700 can accommodate up to 350 e-books and will also play DRM-free music and spokenword audio.

Many readers reminded us of what no-one can have failed to hear: that the Congress passed and the President signed a $700B bailout bill in an attempt to avert the meltdown of the US economy. The bill allocates $700 billion to the Treasury Department for the purchase of so-called "toxic assets" that have been weighing down Wall Street balance sheets. This isn't particularly a tech story, though tech will be affected as will virtually all parts of the economy, and not just in the US. Among the $110B in so-called pork added to the bill to sway reluctant legislators are extensions of popular tax benefits for business R&D and alternative energy, relief for the growing pool of people subject to the alternative minimum tax, and a provision raising the FDIC's ceiling of guaranteed deposits to $250,000.

pdragon04 writes "According to The Register, "the Knights Templar are demanding that the Vatican give them back their good name and, possibly, billions in assets into the bargain, 700 years after the order was brutally suppressed by a joint venture between the Pope and the King of France..."." I wonder what a holy grail goes for with 700 years of compound interest.

Quantum dots (QDs) refer to one of several promising materials niche sectors that recently have emerged from the burgeoning growth area of nanotechnology. QDs fall into the category of nanocrystals, which also includes quantum rods and nanowires. As a materials subset, QDs are characterized by particles fabricated to the smallest of dimensions from only a few atoms and upwards. At these tiny dimensions, they behave according to the rules of quantum physics, which describe the behavior of atoms and sub atomic particles, in contrast to classical physics that describes the behavior of bulk materials, or in other words, objects consisting of many atoms.
