Xbox 360 GPU Hits 65nm With "Jasper"

A new Xbox 360 motherboard configuration was found this past week by a reader on the Xbox-Scene forums. This new motherboard, code named "Jasper" contains the fabled 65nm GPU among other improvements.

45nm Opteron Performance, Power Efficiency Tested

An anonymous reader writes "Now that Intel has unleashed its next-generation Core i7 processors, all eyes are turned to AMD and its incoming wave of 45nm CPUs. To get a feel for AMD's future competitiveness, The Tech Report has taken a pair of 2.7GHz 45nm Opterons (with 75W power envelopes) and put them through the paces against Intel Xeons and older, 65nm Opterons in an extensive suite of performance and power efficiency tests — from Cinema 4D and SPECjbb to computational fluid dynamics and a custom XML handling benchmark. The verdict: AMD's new 45nm quad-core design is a notable improvement over the 65nm iteration, and it proves to be a remarkably power-efficient competitor to Intel's Xeons. However, 45nm AMD chips likely don't have what it takes to best Intel's Core i7 and future Nehalem-based Xeons.

Sandbridge Rolls Out 65nm Dynamically Reprogrammable, 4G Capable Baseband Platform for Smartphones

PRNewswire/ -- Sandbridge Technologies announced today the release of their SB3500 flexible baseband processor which facilitates the implementation of 4G mobile handsets entirely in software. Capable of operating any radio protocol required for a common (universal) multi-mode, multi-function mobile platform, the SB3500 meets critical power consumption specifications of wireless carriers and significantly reduces time-to-market and overall development costs for OEMs.

Xbox 360 with 65nm Xenos GPU spotted?

Xbox 360 has been a great success for Microsoft, but the video game console has perhaps also been the most criticized of the current generation consoles. Not the least for its power consumption and high temperatures. One of the ways to fix this is to turn to more power efficient components and the perhaps most demanding components is the graphics processor. The made-by-AMD Xenos GPU found in Xbox 360 is powerful, but also a real power hog and emits more than plenty of heat. Many have been waiting for Microsoft to shrink the manufacturing process to enable a cooler and more power efficient chip.

Jasper Found in the Wild: 65nm Xbox 360s are Appearing

After entirely too long, Jasper has finally been discovered in the wild. As we originally predicted back in early October, the first Jaspers were identified by being labeled 12.1A on the 12V rail. Somewhat surprisingly, the first ones discovered also came with a 150W PSU. We of course knew this would happen eventually, but many believed that early Jaspers would use left over 175W PSUs. It's still possible there are some Jaspers floating around labeled as 14.2A and including a 175W PSU that were simply never recognized for what they were. Also as predicted, the Jasper motherboard featured a new PSU power connector that prevents using a newer, less powerful power supply on an older Xbox that needs more power. This information wasn't confirmation enough for some, but no doubt remained after one was finally dissected.

Jasper-Based Xbox 360 Consoles Hit The Scene

After months of anticipation and speculation, revised Xbox 360 consoles built around the new Jasper platform have finally appeared in the wild. Jasper employs an updated GPU manufactured using 65nm process, as opposed to the 90nm process used for the original revision. Other than the GPU, however, a few more changes have been made as well, as reported by the folks at Xbox-Scene…
