It's been a month since the iTunes App Store went live, and in an interview with the Wall St Journal, Steve Jobs has put the apps downloads figure at over 60 million. With the mix of free and paid apps, that brought Apple around $30 million. That's obviously encouraged Steve: he's enthusiastic that maybe "it will be a $1 billion marketplace at some point in time" adding that he's "never seen anything like this in my career for software." And in a slightly unusual candid comment, for Steve anyway, he's admitted that the apps won't be making Apple much profit—instead future sales hopes are pinned on the applications tempting people to buy more iPhones and iPod touches.

Ubuntu is a popular Linux distro that has been available as a free download since in initial release back in 2004. However, there are some obstacles that stand in the way of adoption but the non-technical out there not the least of which is the need for a high-speed connection for the download and the tools needed to burn an ISO image (right -What's an ISO image?). In an effort to expand its reach beyond enthusiasts and the more technical savvy, Canonical Ltd. is partnering with Best Buy stores to offer a boxed set of the software for $19.99US. What the retail version gets you, besides the install discs, is a quick install guide along with 60 days of free support. The boxed sets are produced by ValuSoft which will also provide the support with backup help from Canonical for any issues its support staff can't handle.

Digital Camera PouchFor those who don’t do tripods or want something a little handier, Etsumi has developed a Digital Camera Pouch with built-in stand. The device is available in dark grey or pink, and comes in two models, the S-sized 60 x 25 x 90mm and the M-sized 60 x 32 x 93mm. Pre-order for $31.26 for a September 1 release date. We like that the case is tiny enough that we can sneak it into places that keep discouraging us from taking “unauthorized” pictures, namely aging rock stars who don’t want to be seen on YouTube or Flickr.

Ponca City, We love you writes "Once the US converts from analog to digital broadcasting next February, those who receive their signals over the air will need a converter box for older, non-digital models. Government-approved converter boxes sell for $60 or less and a government-issued $40 rebate coupon is available for the asking but that hasn't stopped companies like the Ohio-based Universal TechTronics from offering supposedly free converter boxes. The gimmick: the box is free, as long as you pay $88 for a five-year warranty, plus $9.30 shipping. Universal TechTronics seems to specialize in 'high-tech' products of questionable value, marketing the Cool Surge portable air cooler, 'a work of engineering genius from the China coast so advanced that no windows, vents, or freon are needed' that uses the same energy as a 60-watt light bulb.
