"This article explains how to write a custom Java 2D image-processing class by implementing the BufferedImageOp interface. It uses a 2D cellular automaton (CA) — cyclic space — in constructing the image-processing application. The CA "operates" on an image (for example, a JPEG file), causing the image to transform in interesting ways over time. I hope the article will open your eyes to the possibility of writing a whole new class of image-processing applications.

However, none of them so far have been as creative and mind-blowingly awesome as this Gradius level. Check it out after the break."

An anonymous reader writes "Developer 2D Boy has written that they are seeing an 82% piracy rate for everyone's favorite DRM-free physics puzzler, World of Goo . Surprisingly, this rate is in-line with what they were expecting. The article also features a fascinating comparison with the piracy rate of another game that was shipped complete with DRM, at 92%. There seemed to be no major difference in the outcomes of the rate regardless of whether DRM was used or not... well, no difference other than the cost to implement such nonsense."

www.pushingplay.com writes "This is some sad news. 2D Boy, the guys that created World of Goo, are estimating the piracy rate of that game is around 82%. This originally came up over at Rock, Paper, Shotgun in the comments of an article about WoG's European release. One of the creators estimated that the piracy rate was about 90%. That's a big number."

The question with World Of Goo was never one of the appeal of its underlying mechanics. 2D Boy co-founder Kyle Gabler’s original Tower Of Goo proved an essential freeware download (Internet Game of the Month in E149) and the hallmark of the Experimental Gameplay Project he helped found, as it took the staid engineering delight of Bridge Builder and Pontifex (and, subsequently, Elefunk) and infused it down to its very rivets with anthropomorphic charm and soul.

Though a direct comparison of the two would be unfair, in many ways Line Rider 2 faced the same dilemma as 2D Boy’s World Of Goo: how do you take a hit freeware downloadable and expand it to a full retail release? InXile’s answer, to add pre-set story mode challenges, might seem an obvious one, but in practice brings the game to the kind of crashing halt seen in so many of its hastily drawn loops. To ease the player into learning both its creation tools and the larger laws of its universe, InXile has created increasingly complex levels but deleted large swaths of track, leaving players to fill in the gaps.
