Michael Griffin, administrator of the American space agency, NASA has ordered a study into considering the possibility of continuing the usage of the space shuttle, a space vehicle that takes astronauts to the International Space Station. The agency originally planned to retire all shuttles in 2010 after mission STS-134, but concerns over staff job losses that were created by the Space Shuttle program caused Griffin to order the study. The space crafts have been in use since 1981 and it's replacements, the Ares rockets, will not be in use until 2015 causing a 5 year gap where NASA will have no manned space flights, which is the reason the agency is considering extending usage for five more years, when the vehicles can be immediately replaced by their successors.

In an overlooked USA Today article from Friday, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson and "insider sources" quietly all but confirmed that the company has retained exclusive rights to the iPhone until 2010. The previous exclusivity agreement with Apple had AT&T retaining the rights until 2009. The article implies AT&T managed to negotiate the extension thanks in part to the subsidized $200/$300 iPhone 3G's it's eating by the hundreds of thousands right now. In the article, Stephenson declined to discuss the specifics of the new contract with Apple. He did admit that he is "very happy" with the new arrangement, however. This is bad news for you folks holding out for more iPhone carriers in the US market. Now you'll apparently have to wait a little longer.

According to an internal email, NASA staff have been instructed to initiate a study into extending the operational lifetime of the Shuttle to bridge the 5-year gap between planned Shuttle retirement and Constellation commencement. In an apparent U-turn in the US space agency's policy, NASA Administrator Michael Griffin has ordered a feasibility study to assess whether the ageing space vehicle fleet, first launched in 1981, can operate until 2015. This news comes at a time when concern is mounting for the US dependence on the Soyuz system after 2010, especially since the recent political chill between the US and Russia…

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (MCT) - NASA Administrator Michael Griffin has ordered his top officials to study how the agency could fly the space shuttle beyond its planned retirement in 2010, according to an internal e-mail obtained by The Orlando Sentinel. The decision signals what could be a huge change in NASA policy. Griffin steadfastly opposed extending the shuttle era beyond its 2010 retirement date, arguing it could kill astronauts and cripple the agency's fledgling Constellation program, a system of new rockets and capsules meant to replace the shuttle. But geopolitics and political pressure are undermining his position. The Russian invasion of neighboring Georgia has chilled relations between Washington and Moscow. 9 to 5 Mac proclaims that Verizon and Apple will announce in 2009 that the iPhone will be coming to Verizon. That's not particularly surprising, but keep in mind that Verizon can't technically offer the phone until 2010. AT&T and Apple's agreement was renegotiated with the launch of the iPhone 3G, and AT&T's exclusive distribution rights were extended into 2010. Verizon iPhone availability should make many customers happy, given AT&T's network coverage (broadband or otherwise) and call quality simply does not mach up in many of the two companies overlapping markets (upstate NY comes to mind).
