1UP FM and Kathleen Sanders Dissect Microsoft's XNA

We had a crazy Monday, so our latest episode of 1UP FM went up a bit later than usual, but we're making up for it with a seriously overstuffed show. Our feature this week sees Kathleen Sanders return to 1UP Manor to tell us about the latest offering from her new corporate overlords at Microsoft: the XNA initiative. We talk about what these new user-created games will mean for regular Xbox 360 owners, which games are looking the best, and more.

1UP: Tabula Rasa is now $1

You may be reading that title up there and thinking that's a typo -- like 1UP must have forgotten a zero or something. And you'd be right, 1UP did forget something: not to round up.

1UP: Wrath of the Lich King U.S. Servers Go Live at 9 p.m. PST

"Thanks to quality retailers like 7-Eleven selling the game days ahead of time, many gamers have found that they still have to wait for the official launch to play their early copies of World of Warcraft's Wrath of the Lich King expansion. Luckily, WOW Insider is reporting that the wait is almost over, as Blizzard has changed their previous launch plans to allow everyone in the U.S. -- regardless of time zone -- to hop a boat to Northrend at 9 p.m. PST tonight. The European servers, it seems, are already up and running with the new expansion content."

1Up.com:Japan Review Check: Mirror's Edge

Mirror's Edge, out now for the 360 and PS3, has demonstrated a tendency to divide its owners. Most reviewers in the US and Europe loved its novel action and unique visual style -- except for the ones that hated it all, of course.

iPhone Gaming Continues To Grow

1Up reports that the popularity of gaming on smartphones is growing, particularly on the iPhone. In fact, gaming on portable devices is growing even at home, where users presumably have access to more powerful platforms. CNN points out that the developer for Trism, one of the first popular games, has raked in over $250,000 in profits through the App Store. Apple exec Bob Borchers and various game developers recently discussed the future of games on the iPhone. "Patrick Gunn, director of marketing for EA Mobile, showcased Need for Speed Undercover, which will be available next month. Gunn says that EA has 'taken full advantage of all of the unique elements... like touch, flick, accelerometer, and motion sensitivity' — and graphically, the game appears to be roughly on par with a PSP title.

Microsoft Admits to Banjo-Kazooie Preorder Code Problems, Delays XBLA Release to December 3

1UP contacted Microsoft to see if they knew what was going on and received the following official response:

Sony Patents Reconfigurable Controller

1Up reports on a patent recently awarded to Sony for a game controller that fits together in several different ways to accommodate different types of gameplay. It also appears to make use of motion-sensing technology, much like the Wiimote. "This new controller isn't just another revision of the Sixaxis; rather, it looks like a complete overhaul of the form and function of the device, resembling a pair of ice cream cones more than Sony's ubiquitous Dual Shock. The images accompanying the patent display two Wii-like remotes with removable button faceplates, topped off with strange, bulb-like shapes. These glowing, spherical structures house LEDs and ultrasonic sound emitters, which would allow the PlayStation Eye camera to determine the controllers' positions in three-dimensional space.

Unlock Extra Content In the Mirror's Edge Demo

1UP is giving away 100 codes that will unlock additional content within the Mirror's Edge demo, hitting tomorrow on PS3 and Friday on 360. With this bonus content, you can race against the clock and test out a few of the game's time trials before retail copies hit the streets

Happy Holidays! SAGA Game Giveaway on FileFront.com

Silverlode Interactive has partnered with 1UP to give away loaded and fully registered copies of SAGA the world’s first collectible MMO RTS

Angelina Jolie Losing Weight Thanks to the Nintendo DS

Here is a bit of news that will get the male portion of 1UP's audience to perk their ears up a bit: Angelina Jolie not only allows her children to play videogames, but thanks to Konami's Let's Pilates for the Nintendo DS, Jolie is now reaping the benefits of the gaming age.

MotorStorm's Target Render "Pissed Us Off A Lot" Say Devs

Evolution Studios lead designer Nigel Kershaw and creative director Paul Hollywood, responsible for the recent MotorStorm: Pacific Rift for the PlayStation 3, tell 1UP that the "infamous" E3 2005 trailer for the first MotorStorm "kind of pissed us off a lot." Why? Well, for one thing, it wasn't created by them and set the team up for "expectations about the rendering prowess that we were going to expose."

Early Reviews Reflect Well On Mirror's Edge

The much-anticipated first person non-shooter Mirror's Edge is being released today for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. Reviews for the game, while not without complaints, are generally positive. 1Up praises the controls, saying, "It gets things very right very early, distilling its first-person platformer ambitions into a very manageable control scheme. ... Once you're familiar with Faith's abilities and their limitations — imparted through a much-needed tutorial — it's easy to see potential routes through the world." Ars Technica is more critical, noting that the main story's gameplay only clocks in at about six hours, and that the artistic style doesn't vary much between levels. Nick Channon, a producer for Mirror's Edge, sat down with Gamasutra and discussed the reasoning for some of their design choices.

Japanese Nintendo DSi Ad Reveals Hidden Feature

The first Japanese ad for the DSi not only reveals who they're really targeting—the really young and really old—but a secret feature. In addition to the whole camera and wacky photo editing it's got going on, it's also a digital picture frame! Perfect for grandparents to display wildly distorted pictures of their grandchildren scribbled with embarrassing notes. Oh, and I think might play games too. Maybe? [1UP via Kotaku]
