Olympians in Lenovo Blogger Program Open a Channel to Fans Worldwide, Changing the Olympic Games Experience BEIJING--(Business Wire)-- Olympic athletes taking part in the Lenovo "Voices of the Olympic Games" blogging program have found that blogging creates deeper connections with fans worldwide - many they did not even know existed. How bad was 2007 for breaches, vulnerabilities and similar mayhem? On the bright side, it was better than 2008 is forecast to be. With more of every sort of meltdown predicted -- more criminalization of the hacker community, more Web-application attacks, more phishing, more spamming, more zero-day attacks and more virtualization-related threats -- we're happy to tell you that you are likely to look back on 2007 as the peaceful old days.

SpuriousLogic brings us this excerpt from a BBC report: "Prof. Heeks said very accurate figures for the size of the gold farming sector were hard to come by, but his work suggested that in 2008 it employs 400,000 people who earn an average of $145 (77) per month creating a global market worth about $500m. ... Already, he said, gold farming was comparable in size to India's outsourcing industry. 'The Indian software employment figure probably crossed the 400,000 mark in 2004 and is now closer to 900,000,' said Prof Heeks. 'Nonetheless, the two are still comparable in employment size, yet not at all in terms of profile.' Prof Heeks suspects gold-farming might be an early example of the 'virtual offshoring' likely to become more prevalent as people spend more time working and playing in cyberspace.

Google plans to expand its finance Web site by adding more historical data and company filings as it tries to gain ground on more-popular services from Yahoo and AOL. The company will also seek to improve its 2-year-old finance site by offering real-time stock prices from the New York Stock Exchange on a permanent basis after a four-month pilot started this week, said R.J. Pittman, director of product management. Google's finance pages had 2.07 million U.S. visitors last month, ranking 13th on researcher ComScore's list of top financial sites. The company plans to use its search technology to help users find data more efficiently, rather than adding editorial content to lure more users, Pittman said. Adding features such as up-to-the-minute stock quotes will help Google lure more visitors that may then visit the company's other sites, sai

BEIJING (Agencies): As players from around the world backed former Australia wicket-keeper Adam Gilchrist's call for Twenty20 cricket to become an Olympic sport, officials said it would take another 12 years at least for it to get on the Games roster. But a spokesman for the International Cricket Council, the global governing body, said that if cricket decided it was intent on pursuing Olympic ambitions, then Cricket was part of the Olympics just once, in 1900, but last year it was again recognised as an Olympic sport -- the first step towards full admission. Gilchrist, in his column for Indian daily the Deccan Chronicle, said Monday: "It doesn't matter where the 2020 Olympic Games are held but many of us who've experienced international Twenty20 cricket and the IPL (Indian Premier League) are convinced that cricket should bid to become a

Geoffrey.landis writes "Some of you may have heard me talk about colonizing Venus. Well, for those who haven't, Universe Today is running story about floating cities on Venus. It's a reasonable alternative for space colonies — after all, the atmosphere of Venus (at about 50 km) is the most Earth-like environment in the solar system (other than Earth, of course). '50 km above the surface, Venus has air pressure of approximately 1 bar and temperatures in the 0C-50C range, a quite comfortable environment for humans. Humans wouldn't require pressurized suits when outside, but it wouldn't quite be a shirtsleeves environment. We'd need air to breathe and protection from the sulfuric acid in the atmosphere.'"
