Astronomers Find Oldest Known Asteroids

Researchers from the University of Maryland have recently discovered three asteroids that appear to be roughly 4.55 billion years old, dating back to the formation of the Solar System. The scientists say that the asteroids have survived relatively unchanged since that time, and make good candidates for future space missions. "'The fall of the Allende meteorite in 1969 initiated a revolution in the study of the early Solar System,' said Tim McCoy, curator of the national meteorite collection at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. 'I find it amazing that it took us nearly 40 years to collect spectra of these [CAI-rich] objects and that those spectra would now initiate another revolution, pointing us to the asteroids that record this earliest stage in the history of our Solar System.

Need an Idea for a Solar System School Project? Build a Scale Model of the Solar System

Everyone seemed to enjoy the answer to my daughter's question, "what's the biggest star?", so I thought I'd give you another insight into space science at the Cain household. A couple of months ago, we built a scaled map of the Solar System. I thought I'd share my process and resources with you, and throw in a few cute pictures of the kids. So come on, let's build a solar system in your neighborhood.

Hot Water Sanitizable USP Quality Reverse Osmosis / EDI Water Purificaiton System

The Mar Cor Purification USPure system is a standard single skid design that includes pretreatment, Reverse Osmosis (RO) & Electrodeionization (EDI) on one integrated skid for fast installation & startup. The validatable system offers a pre-designed space saving layout that is cost effective and assures the reliable production of USP grades of water. The complete system provides for sanitary piping & instrumentation from the RO outlet through to the EDI outlet. The entire system is controlled by a PLC based control system. Two designs are available for sanitization either hot water or chemical. Each system is manufactured under strict Quality Control procedures conforming to ISO 9001:2000. To assure the system is ready for fast startup in your facility, each system is factory acceptance wet tested (FAT) prior to shipment.

Astronomers Locate Solar System Very Similar To Our Own

Smivs writes "Astronomers from St Andrews University in the UK have discovered a planetary system which looks much like our own. Dr Martin Dominik told BBC news: 'We found a system with two planets that take the roles of Jupiter and Saturn in our Solar System. These two planets have a similar mass ratio and similar orbital radius and a similar orbital period. The newfound planetary system, which orbits the star OGLE-2006-BLG-109L, is more compact than our own and is about five thousand light-years away. The OGLE planets were found using a technique called gravitational micro-lensing, in which light from the faraway planets is bent and magnified by the gravity of a foreground object, in this case a another star.'" U.S. Department of Energy to Invest up to $13.7 Million for Breakthrough Solar Energy Projects

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced that DOE will invest up to $13.7 million, over three years (Fiscal Years 2008 - 2010), for 11 university-led projects that will focus on developing advanced solar photovoltaic (PV) technology manufacturing processes and products. These projects are integral to President Bush's Solar America Initiative, which aims to make solar energy cost-competitive with conventional forms of electricity by 2015. Increasing the use of solar energy is also critical to diversifying our nation's energy sources in an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on foreign oil. Combined with a minimum university and industry cost share of 20%, up to $17.4 million will be invested in these projects.

Ten Exotic Planets Outside Our Solar System Discovered With New Technique

An international team of astronomers has found 10 new "extra solar" planets, planets that orbit stars other than our sun. The team used a system of robotic cameras that yield a great deal of information about these other worlds, some of which are quite exotic. The system is expected to revolutionize scientific understanding of how planets form.

Electric Solar Wind Sail Could Power Future Space Travel In Solar System

The electric solar wind sail developed at the Finnish Meteorological Institute two years ago has moved rapidly from invention towards implementation. Electric sail propulsion might have a large impact on space research and space travel throughout the solar system.

Computer System Makes Best Sports Bets

schliz writes to tell us that a new computer system using the "Logistic Regression Markov Chain" (LRMC) has proven to be the most efficient system at predicting sporting event outcomes. The system was tested on the 2008 US NCAA basketball season and picked all four of the finalists. "Similar to other rankings systems, LRMC uses the quality of each NCAA team's results and the strength of each team's schedule to rank teams. The method has been designed to use only basic scoreboard data, including which teams played, which team had home court advantage and the margin of victory."

Today, Ascent Solar (ASTI: View sentiment for ASTIsentiment, chart, options) is up more than 4% following a cooperation agreement with Icopal SAS, while Renesola (SOL: View sentiment for SOLsentiment, chart, options) has jumped some 9.5% after signing a 6-year supply agreement with Ningbo Solar and Eoplly New Energy.

DOE Shines $14M on Solar Energy Research

coondoggie writes "Eleven university solar research projects aimed at developing advanced solar photovoltaic (PV) technology manufacturing processes and products got a $14 million boost today from the Dept. of Energy. Photovoltaic-based solar cells convert sunlight directly into electricity, and are made of semiconductor materials similar to those used in computer chips. When sunlight is absorbed by these materials, the solar energy knocks electrons loose from their atoms, allowing the electrons to flow through the material to produce electricity."
