UN Chief Ban Ki-moon to Meet Korean Astronaut

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will meet South Korea's first astronaut, Yi So-yeon, in Seoul, Thursday, to congratulate her on a successful space mission in April, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said Monday.

Astronaut Barbara Morgan to Leave NASA

"Barbara has served NASA and the Astronaut Office with distinction over the course of her career," Astronaut Office chief Steve Lindsey said. "From the Teacher in Space Program to her current position as a fully qualified astronaut, she has set a superb example and been a consistent role model for both teachers and students. She will be missed."

Cassini Prepares For Close Flyby of Saturn's Geyser-Spewing Moon

Saturn's tiny moon Enceladus is of big interest to planetary scientists trying to understand the dynamics of the moon's geysers and fissures. On August 11, the Cassini spacecraft will swoop by Enceladus for a close flyby, just 50 kilometers (30 miles) from the surface, with the fractures, or "tiger stripes" near the moon's south pole, where icy jets erupt as the target of study for the Cassini instruments. "Our main goal is to get the most detailed images and remote sensing data ever of the geologically active features on Enceladus," said Paul Helfenstein, a Cassini imaging team associate at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. "From this data we may learn more about how eruptions, tectonics, and seismic activity alter the moon's surface. We will get an unprecedented high-resolution view of the active area immediately following the closest a

Moon Website Launched

The official website for Moon, is now live, offering new details about this game developed by Renegade Kid. Moon is a sci-fi, action-adventure title for Nintendo DS which places gamers on the cold lunar surface in the year 2058. Researchers are shocked to find a sealed, alien hatch during construction of a new lunar base, but it's a shock that soon pales in comparison to what they find beyond the hatch. Moon promises to deliver high-quality 3D visuals, intuitive controls, real-time lighting, and dynamic audio.

Moon May Have Once Had Water

Smivs writes "US scientists have found evidence that water was held in the Moon's interior, challenging some elements of the theory of how Earth's satellite formed. The Moon is thought to have been created in a violent collision between Earth and another planet-sized object. Scientists thought the heat from this impact had vaporised all the water. But a new study in Nature magazine shows water was delivered to the lunar surface from the interior in volcanic eruptions three billion years ago. This suggests that water has been a part of the Moon since its early existence."

Legit Reviews managed to get our hands on a couple movie frames, so take a look at them if you are interested. The NVIDIA event is looking like it will draw a fair number of people to it as they are getting some big names to show up!

Mars Express acquires sharpest images of martian moon Phobos

Mars Express closed in on the intriguing martian moon Phobos at 6:49 CEST on 23 July, flying past at 3 km/s, only 93 km from the moon. The ESA spacecrafts fly-bys of the moon have returned its most detailed full-disc images ever, also in 3-D, using the High Resolution Stereo Camera on board.

NASA engineers work on alternative moon rocket

This artist rendering shows NASA's next-generation of moon rockets being developed at the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in Huntsville, Ala. Ares I, left, is the crew launch vehicle that will carry astronauts to space. Ares V is the cargo launch vehicle that will deliver the lunar lander and other large hardware to space. By day, the engineers in Huntsville, work on NASA's new Ares moon rockets. By night, some go undercover, working on a competing design. These dissenters and their backers say their alternative rocket would be safer, cheaper and easier to build than the two Ares spacecraft, which have already cost NASA $7 billion. Send the ISS To the Moon

jmichaelg writes "Michael Benson is proposing that NASA send the ISS to the moon instead of leaving it in low earth orbit. (While we're at it, we should re-brand it as the 'International Space Ship.') He points out that it's already designed to be moved periodically to higher orbits so instead of just boosting it a few miles, strap on some ion engines and put it in orbit around the moon instead of the earth. That would provide an initial base for the astronauts going to the moon and give the ISS a purpose other than performing yet more studies on the effect of micro gravity on humans. Benson concludes: 'Let's begin the process of turning the ISS from an Earth-orbiting caterpillar into an interplanetary butterfly.'"

NASA to Develop GPS-Like System for the Moon

During the second moonwalk of the Apollo 14 mission, Alan Shepard and Edgar Mitchell were hoping to walk to the 300 meter (1,000 feet) wide Cone Crater on the moon, not far from their landing site. However, the two astronauts were not able to find the crater's rim amid the rolling, repetitive terrain. Later analysis using pictures the two astronauts took determined they had come within 65 feet of the crater. People are used to having certain visual cues to judge distances, such as the size of a building or another car on the horizon, said Ron Li, who has been awarded a $1.2 million grant to develop a navigation system to be used on the moon. Since the moon has no landmarks or cues to help determine distance, getting lost, or misjudging a distant object's size and location would be easy, and extremely dangerous.

eBay Negotiating Minority Stake in South Koreas GMarket

eBay (NSDQ: EBAY) is in talks to acquire a minority stake in GMarket, a South Korean online auctioneer. The talks are with Interpark Corp., the Korean portal that owns 37 percent of the company. A spokesperson from eBay told AP that there was no certainty a deal would be reached or that it would be approved by South Korean regulators—eBay already owns a South Korean competitor, the aptly named Internet Auction. No deal terms have been announced, although shares of NASDAQ-listed GMarket shot up over 14 percent on the news. In 2006, Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) took a 10 percent stake in GMarket, so they’re a beneficiary of this as well.
