Blue is my favorite color. Especially the shade of blue in the image for this week's "Where In The Universe" challenge. It's just such an uplifting color. But back to the challenge. The goal of this challenge is to test your skills and knowledge of our solar system. Guess where this image is from, and give yourself extra points if you can guess which spacecraft is responsible for the image. As always, don't peek below before you make your guess. Comments on how you did are welcome.

It's Wednesday, so that means its time for another "Where In The Universe" challenge to test your visual knowledge of the cosmos. We've been busy searching hither and yon for unusual and unique astronomical images to see how well our readers are acquainted with the various locals across the universe. This week's image is an unusual looking object. Just what is this thing? Could it be an asteroid, a wierd moon, or something you can find on Earth? Hmmm…… Ponder the image for awhile, and no peeking below before you make a guess. If only I could insert some music here, like the "Think!" theme song from the Jeopardy game show. I'll have to talk to Fraser about that…

This is beginning to feel a bit like Groundhog Day, but someone is putting out these leaks for a reason. Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) and Google (NSDQ: GOOG) could announce an ad outsourcing deal early next week according to a Dow Jones (NYSE: NWS) Newswires report at WSJ. Of course, this deal was said to be coming ‘next week’ last week and a couple of weeks before that.

After the record-breaking $500 million first-week sales of Grand Theft Auto IV, the business of video games is under the microscope again this week. This time, however, it’s not outraged parents doing the scrutinizing. It’s lawmakers. Congress introduced a bill this week pushing for government regulation of the gaming industry, just as the Federal Trade Commission released a report that found some stores are selling violent video games to kids despite a drive to have them observe the industry’s rating system. The Video Games Ratings Enforcement Act, introduced to the House floor this week by Reps. Lee Terry, R-Neb., and Jim Matheson, D-Utah, would force stores to check the identification of anyone purchasing games rated M and AO. Stores that violate the rule would be fined $5,000 by the FTC.

With all the excitement of Phoenix's successful landing and subsequent activities, I almost forgot that its time for another "Where In The Universe" challenge. So, I've been blazing across the internet, trying to shoot off another version of this challenge without causing a conflagration or bursting into spontaneous human combustion (OK, I know that doesn't really happen, but it fits here.)

One of the applications I always knew would be a wonderful addition to the iPhone with its large beautiful display is SlingPlayer Mobile and tonight I received an email from their new Beta Manager that a proof of concept version will be shown at the WWDC this week. They will show a version running on a jailbroken iPhone and unfortunately this version is not available to anyone, even if you you a jailbroken iPhone. Sling Media is still waiting for the final release of the SDK and will then attempt to get SlingPlayer Mobile out and available through the Apple store for everyone to purchase. Check out more photos and a video of this in action at Dave Zatz’s site.

coondoggie writes "Solar race cars this week began their nine-day, 2,400 mile chase from Dallas to Calgary, Alberta using only the sun for fuel. The 24 teams in the American Solar Challenge race are mainly US college teams including entries from MIT, Ohio State and Northwestern. The University of Michigan's Continuum car is the defending champ, having won the Challenge in Australia last year. The University of Michigan has won four out of the eight North American Solar Challenges it has entered with its team of more than 100 engineering students, who have vowed to defend their title this year."

canadian_right informs us that scientists from Caltech have found hints of a time before the Big Bang while studying the cosmic microwave background. Not only does the study hint at something pre-existing our universe, the researchers also postulate that everything we see was created as a bubble pinched off from a previously existing universe. This conjecture turns out to shed light on the mystery of the arrow of time. Quoting the BBC's account: "Their model suggests that new universes could be created spontaneously from apparently empty space. From inside the parent universe, the event would be surprisingly unspectacular. Describing the team's work at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society (AAS) in St Louis, Missouri, co-author Professor Sean Carroll explained that 'a universe could form inside this room and we'd never know.

The Money Blog this week asked a simple but important question: how do you feel about paying for the pension privileges of public sector workers? The response we got was extraordinary, highlighting how deep emotions run on this hot political issue. Anyone wanting to understand the pensions dilemma now facing the UK would do well to read Steve Bee’s original article and even a handful of the eighty or so responses received by the Money Blog on the same topic by the end of the week.

The whole point of putting telescopes in orbit is to avoid distortions caused by our murky atmosphere. But now astronomers say they have calculated only half the light of our universe reaches telescopes – even those in orbit – because of the amount of dust that permeates the universe. In essence, they say, the universe is twice as bright as previously thought. The lead author of a new paper detailing this discovery, Dr. Simon Driver from the University of St Andrews said, “For nearly two decades we’ve argued about whether the light that we see from distant galaxies tells the whole story or not. It doesn’t; in fact only half the energy produced by stars actually reaches our telescopes directly, the rest is blocked by dust grains.”
