The Big Announcement Chandra VLA Find Youngest Supernova in Our Galaxy: related news

The Big Announcement: Chandra, VLA Find Youngest Supernova in Our Galaxy

Astronomers have found the remains of the youngest supernova, or exploded star, in the Milky Way Galaxy. The supernova occurred in 1868, but was hidden behind a thick veil of gas and dust. Using the Very Large Array (VLA) and NASA's Chandra X-Ray Observatory, which could peer through the veil, astronomers have now found "G1.9+0.3," the first example of what scientists believe are a "missing population" of young supernova remnants. This is NASA's long awaited announcement, and astronomers have been searching for over 50 years for this type of young supernova.

Discovery Of Most Recent Supernova In Our Galaxy

The most recent supernova in our Galaxy has been discovered by tracking the rapid expansion of its remains. This result, using NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and NRAO's Very Large Array (VLA), has implications for understanding how often supernovas explode in the Milky Way galaxy.

Liveblog: NASA Announcement of "Success of Long Galactic Hunt" at 10 AM PST

Scientists using a combination of radio and X-rays have found the most recent supernova remnant observed in our galaxy, located about 26,000 light-years from here. It's the youngest, most energetic supernova we know and could shed light on just exactly how the stardust we're made of -- heavier elements and all -- gets created. The finding also lends some support to astronomers' calculations that there should be about three supernovae in our galaxy per century, although they still need to find dozens more similar supernova remnants to confirm their suspicions.

Galaxy's youngest known supernova is 140 years old

Astronomers have discovered the youngest known supernova in the Milky Way galaxy, still just a baby at 140 years old. The scientists, who announced their findings Wednesday, used a radio observatory in New Mexico and NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory in space to identify when the supernova, or stellar, explosion occurred. They put the star-dying event at sometime around 1868.

Astronomers find youngest supernova remnant in milky way

An international team of astronomers have found the youngest known supernova remnant in the Galaxy. Using observations made with the Very Large Array (VLA) radio telescope in the US and the orbiting Chandra X-ray observatory, the scientists report that the remnant, G1.9+0.3, is just 150 years old. University of Cambridge scientist Dr Dave Green and colleagues discuss the discovery in a paper to be published in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

A supernova is caught in the act of exploding

Astronomers have, for the first time, observed a star in the act of exploding. The event happened in January while NASA’s Swift satellite was observing another supernova in the same galaxy. The supernova explosion was preceded by an X-ray outburst of about seven minutes. This new milestone in the study of supernova explosions was published just a week after the announcement of the discovery of the remains of the most recent supernova in our galaxy.

Youngest Galactic Supernova Found, But No Aliens

Simon Howes writes "After searching for decades, astronomers have found a supernova in our galaxy! So it wasn't little green men we were waiting for. It's located very near the center of the galaxy, about 28,000 light years away, and it's only at most about 140 years old. Quote from Bad Astronomy: 'If you're wondering what all the buzz has been about the past few days over a NASA discovery, then wait no longer. No, it's not aliens or an incoming asteroid. Instead, it's still very cool: astronomers have found the youngest supernova in the Milky Way.'" FiReaNGeL contributes a link to coverage on e! Science News; I think Wired's account of the super-hyped tele-press-conference is the funniest.
