Space Weddings Are Not That Far Away: related news

Space Weddings Are Not That Far Away

Eric Anderson, director and CEO of Space Adventures, is working on yet another ambitious project – to carry people into orbit and further with own personal rockets. To that end, he gave the order and the money to Russian engineers, who are to build him a Soyuz-class missile, capable of orbital delivery. The stipulated date for the completion of the work is not yet available.

It's Official, Australia Needs a Space Agency

Dante_J writes "In the final report published by the Australian Senate inquiry into 'The Current State of Australia's Space Science & Industry Sector' entitled 'Lost in Space? Setting a new direction for Australia's space science and industry sector,' it calls for the formation of a 'Space Industry Advisory Council' to oversee the creation of a fully-fledged Australian Space Agency. Of the top 20 GDP nations, Australia is the only one without a Space Agency, which impacts on many aspects of ordinary life, not to mention Research and Engineering endeavors. Every satellite operated by Australia is owned by another party and the costs of this alone are comparable to that of a Space Agency. The report is a tidy piece that drew upon submissions form Andy Thomas, and an impressive collection of Australian Academics and Space Science entities fr

SPACE: Chinese Space Walkers Stalk The Space Station

November 3, 2008: On September 27th, a Chinese Shenzhou space capsule came within 45 kilometers of the International Space Station, and two of the three crewmen made the first Chinese space walk (going outside the spacecraft in their space suits.) Later, a small, 88 pound microsatellite (the BX-1) was released from the Shenzhou. This was supposed to be a science experiment, but the fact that the Shenzhou came so close to the International Space Station, and then released a smaller, maneuverable (via small gas jets) BX-1, indicated another satellite destruction drill. The BX-1 could easily have been directed at the nearby space station, and destroyed it.

SPACEHAB Sees Opportunity in Space Florida's Launch Complex

SPACEHAB, Incorporated (NASDAQ:SPAB), and its Astrotech subsidiary, leading providers of commercial space services, join with Space Florida in recognizing the immense opportunities for America's commercial space program in the joint Air Force Space Command and Space Florida Dedication Ceremony of Launch Complex 36. The Ceremony marked the symbolic "groundbreaking" following the announcement by the Air Force Space Command of its commitment to commercial space and its intention to lease LC36 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station to Space Florida. The U.S. Air Force's official "intent to lease" the site to Space Florida includes the build-out of the launch pad to support multiple-customers and multi-vehicle configurations for commercial, civil and military customers.

Shields up! How nanotechnology can protect satellites from energy weapons

(Nanowerk Spotlight) When the U.S. military talks about space superiority it defines this as the "degree of control necessary to employ, maneuver, and engage space forces while denying the same capability to an adversary". Although 'space forces' has a Star Wars ring to it, the term basically refers to satellites and these satellites – at least as far as unclassified information goes – do not carry weapons (yet); although the public website of the U.S. Air Force Space Command in listing its capabilities mentions the ability to "conduct defensive and offensive counterspace operations, and space environment assessments". The main functions of the military's space capabilities today are information related – weather, communications, surveillance, reconnaissance, navigation and missile warning capabilities – and has become critical to

What Makes a Smartphone a Smartphone?

We have a large variety of devices out there now. With Windows Mobile, Blackberry, Palm, Nokia, the Iphone, and Google's G1, many would call these smartphones. But as I look around the web I've read that some say devices like the G1 or iphone are not smartphones. Some say they are multimedia phones. When I compare my Dash and my Iphone, there are definitely some differences but there are also many similarities. They both play music, videos, handle all my appointments, contacts, ebooks, bible, internet, email, camera, and so on. So what do you all think? Are all the devices mentioned smartphones? Are some smartphones and some not? Does it matter if the device has a touch screen or not? And of course the real question: What makes a smartphone a smartphone?Â

Role of Intellectual Property in Enhancing the Competitiveness of the Tourism Industry

We are no longer operating in an economy characterized by scarcity but one of plenty, where a multitude of providers jostle for limited space. Success in today’s globalized and very crowded economic environment is, therefore, about adding value and offering a differentiated product. This is true whether we are talking about goods or services. Whether we are buying a bicycle or an insurance policy. Walking into a store to buy a bicycle, one is not content to simply walk away with an item that has two wheels, handle bar and pedals. Our choice is based on many other factors: How does it look, does it have any other new and interesting features, who produces it and of course how much does it cost. All of these considerations are over and above the physical product and are critical to the decision making process.

Matt Bacak Shares Blog Tips to Increase your Profit

(EMAILWIRE.COM, October 11, 2008 ) Duluth, GA (EMAILWIRE) October 11, 2008 A common trend in Internet marketing is that people who are not focused on one single thing are the ones that are not making the most money. You want multiple streams of income, but you do not want to spread yourself too thin. This is especially true when you are first starting out. You can make more money by focusing on one niche. For example, you can work with affiliates who point customers to you. In the end you will earn more money. You can create and optimize systems in your niche. You become an expert in one area which will bring in more cash then spreading yourself among different niches. Your focusing on one niche, can be sharpened through your Blog. Blogs are an excellent and popular way to reach customers.

Space Traffic Monitoring Program Required

The number of space objects that humans have created has grown a lot within the recent decades and will be exponentially increasing in the future. With all the planets and celestial phenomena that should be explored and observed, space missions (such as satellites and stations) are in bloom. Also, as overdue or unneeded devices are blown away, the resulting debris is added to the massive amount of objects floating in Earth's orbit. Thus, an international tracking system for space objects that could reduce risks for future missions is an urgent need.

Space Shuttle Endeavour Moves to Launch Pad 39B

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla., Sept. 19 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- For the first time since July 2001, two shuttles are on the launch pads at the same time at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. Space shuttle Endeavour completed a 4.2-mile journey to Launch Pad 39B on Friday, Sept. 19, at 6:59 a.m. EDT. Endeavour left Kennedy's Vehicle Assembly Building at 11:15 p.m. Thursday, traveling at less than 1 mph atop a massive crawler-transporter. Endeavour will stand by at pad B in the unlikely event that a rescue mission is necessary during space shuttle Atlantis' upcoming mission to repair NASA's Hubble Space Telescope, targeted to launch Oct. 10. After Endeavour is cleared from its duty as a rescue spacecraft, it will be moved to Launch Pad 39A for the STS-126 mission to the International Space Station.

NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center

There are three water-recovery systems under development. In addition to the Marshall device, others are being tested at NASA's Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, Calif., and Johnson Space Center in Houston. The finished product, likely featuring the best parts taken from all three, will consolidate some of the processes that are done separately today. Instead of initially processing urine and condensation separately, the finished recovery system may collect urine and condensation together, plus any water remaining from laundry or showers. (Whereas there are currently no clothes washers or showers on the ISS, NASA does not rule them out for exploratory missions.) Diluting the urine up front makes the decontamination process more efficient.

Disney Giving Away Free iPhone Game To Promote Movie

Reader Terry Westley points us to yet another example of how companies are recognizing that content is advertising. Disney has apparently released a free iPhone game that's fun on its own, but which also serves to help promote an upcoming movie release. While some will dismiss this as just being a cheap way of advertising, you have to wonder what happens when movie makers start making these sorts of games really, really good. Then what happens to game developers who think they can get away with charging for their mobile phone games? Suddenly it becomes a lot harder to support that model if there are other businesses that are using a model where, the more games that are given away for free, the more it helps the rest of their business.

The ISS Marks 10 Years In Space

Matt_dk writes to point out the upcoming tenth anniversary of the International Space Station in two days' time. "On 20 November 1998, a Russian Proton rocket lifted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome for a historic mission: It was carrying the first module of the International Space Station ISS, named Zarya (Russian for 'dawn'). This cargo and control module, which weighs about 20 tonnes and is almost 13 meters long, provides electrical power, propulsion, flight path guidance and storage space. The launch of the module... heralded a new era in space exploration, as, for the first time ever, lasting cooperation in space was achieved between Russia, the US, Europe, Canada and Japan. Over the next ten years, many other modules were brought into orbit, and ISS developed into the largest human outpost in space.

Saatchi Gallery: A study in blandness

There are no rope barriers, individual works are given lots of space, the labelling is discreet, the lighting is good, the walls are an unvarying shade of cream. The floors are expanses of Danish pine and there's nowhere to sit. So what's not to like about the new Saatchi Gallery? The former Duke of York's HQ has been transformed into a study in blandness. If not for the art, we might be at a Kings Road corporate wellness retreat.

eBay Buyer Incentives Are Not a Good Bargain

When is a sale not a good bargain? When it's an eBay (EBAY) sale. Tuesday, eBay announced a new holiday buyer incentive program (starts Nov 3 for 45 days). It is a prime example of why eBay stock has plummeted under Donahoe's watch because discounts are not applied at the time of purchase. Who wants a Paypal credit 2 months later? Not me.

NEWS Nintendo Points are Not Interc...

Nintendo Points, formerly known as Wii Points, will not be as versatile as once thought. While the points are compatible with both the Wii and DSi, it is not possible to transfer points between the systems. For example a person registering a 3000 Nintendo Points card on their DSi will not have access to those points on their Wii.
