Progress cargo spacecraft docks with ISS

The Progress M-65 freighter has successfully docked with the International Space Station (ISS) after a four-day delay caused by Hurricane Ike forcing the evacuation of NASA's space centre in Houston last week, Russia's mission control said today. It was launched on board a Soyuz rocket from the Baikonur space centre in Kazakhstan on September 10.

Russian Soyuz spacecraft TMA-13 carrying US space tourist Richard Garriott has docked with the International Space Station (ISS), RIA Novosti news agency reported today quoting Russia's Mission Control official. The Soyuz TMA-13 craft, which blasted off from the Baikonur space centre in Kazakhstan on Sunday, brought US astronaut Mike Fincke, Russian cosmonaut Yury Lonchakov and US space tourist Garriott to the ISS. Mr Garriott will conduct a variety of scientific experiments during his ten-day stay on the orbiting station. The son of US astronaut Owen Garriott, the sixth space tourist to travel to the ISS made his fortune in online computer games, including the popular Ultima Online. He reportedly paid 30 million dollars for the trip to the ISS.

Cargo-Positioning System for Next-Generation Spacecraft

A report discusses a proposed system for mounting loaded pallets in the cargo bay of a next-generation space-shuttle-like spacecraft, such that the center of mass of the cargo would lie within a 1-in. (2.54- cm) cube that would also contain the center of mass of the spacecraft. The system would include (1) an algorithm for planning the locations of the pallets, given the geometric and weight properties of the pallets, and the geometric restrictions of the cargo bay; (2) quick-connect/ quick-disconnect mounting mechanisms similar to those now used on air hoses; (3) other mounting mechanisms, comprising mostly spring-loaded pins, in a locking subsystem that would prevent shifting of the pallets under load; and (4) mechanisms for performing fine position adjustments to satisfy the center-of-mass requirement.

Chandrayaan-1 Spacecraft's Orbit Raised Further

Bangalore, Oct 25 (ISRO) The second orbit-raising manoeuvre of Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft was carried out at 05:48 hrs IST this morning (October 25, 2008) when the spacecraft’s 440 Newton Liquid Engine was fired for about 16 minutes by commanding the spacecraft from Spacecraft Control Centre (SCC) at ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) at Peenya, Bangalore.? With this engine firing, Chandrayaan-1’s apogee has been further raised to 74,715 km, while its perigee has been raised to 336 km. In this orbit, Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft takes about twenty-five and a half hours to go round the Earth once. This is the first time an Indian spacecraft has gone beyond the 36,000 km high geostationary orbit and reached an altitude more than twice that height.

Simulator for Testing Spacecraft Separation Devices

A report describes the main features of a system for testing pyrotechnic and mechanical devices used to separate spacecraft and modules of spacecraft during flight. The system includes a spacecraft simulator [also denoted a large mobility base (LMB)] equipped with air thrusters, sensors, and data-acquisition equipment. The spacecraft simulator floats on air bearings over an epoxy-covered concrete floor. This free-flotation arrangement enables simulation of motion in outer space in three degrees of freedom: translation along two orthogonal horizontal axes and rotation about a vertical axis. The system also includes a static stand. In one application, the system was used to test a boltretraction system (BRS) intended for separation of the lifting-body and deorbitpropulsion stages of the X-38 spacecraft.

The Spectacular Breakup of ATV: One Final Experiment

In early March 2008, the European Space Agency launched a new spacecraft called the Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV). ATV is a bigger version of the Russian Progress, a re-supply ship for the International Space Station (ISS). ATV had a perfect launch and docked to ISS as planned. After delivering supplies, the craft was used as crew quarters, and at one point helped push ISS out of the way of a dangerous piece of orbital debris. On September 5, 2008, it was finally time to call an end to the mission and the ATV was undocked from the ISS, ready to enter Earth's atmosphere over the South Pacific Ocean. Lacking a heat shield to save weight, the craft will break up on reentry in a spectacular fireball.

Seems like everyone at Mars is getting an extended mission these days – every spacecraft, that is. The Mars Odyssey orbiting spacecraft, the longest-serving of six spacecraft now studying Mars, has gotten another two-year extension of its mission. And mission extensions are great opportunities to try something new, so Odyssey is altering its orbit to get a different and better look at Mars with its Thermal Emission Imaging System which maps minerals on Mars in infrared. During this third mission extension, which goes through September 2010, Odyssey will also be able to point its camera with more flexibility than ever before. Odyssey is another Energizer Bunny-like spacecraft: it has been going and going since it reached Mars in 2001.

"On 20 November 1998, a Russian Proton rocket lifted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome for a historic mission: It was carrying the first module of the International Space Station ISS, named Zarya (Russian for 'dawn'). This cargo and control module, which weighs about 20 tonnes and is almost 13 meters long, provides electrical power, propulsion, flight path guidance and storage space. The launch of the module... heralded a new era in space exploration, as, for the first time ever, lasting cooperation in space was achieved between Russia, the US, Europe, Canada and Japan. Over the next ten years, many other modules were brought into orbit, and ISS developed into the largest human outpost in space.

Russia's Soyuz spacecraft blasts off carrying US tourist Garriott

A Soyuz-FG carrier rocket today lifted off from the Baikonur space centre in Kazakhstan to take a crew of three, including US space tourist Richard Garriott, to the International Space Station (ISS). The three-stage carrier rocket was launched at 1101 hrs Moscow time (1231 hrs IST) as planned, with the Soyuz TMA-13 spacecraft subsequently removing from the rocket, Russian news agencies reported from the launch site. The world's sole orbiter was successfully moved to a higher orbit on October 4 to receive the Soyuz craft carrying the 18th ISS expedition, which includes US astronaut Mike Fincke, Russian cosmonaut Yury Lonchakov and Garriott. The crew was approved by Russia's space agency in September after completing a series of pre-flight tests and medical checks.
