Physicists have come up with a way to explain how information could escape from a black hole, an idea that's been debated since the 1970s.

The inset shows a close-up of the Chandra image where a supermassive black hole about 70 million times more massive than the Sun lurks. A new study using data from Chandra and ground-based telescopes, combined with detailed theoretical models, shows that the giant black hole in M81 feeds just like ones with masses of only about ten times that of the Sun. Artist's rendering of the light echo of a high-energy flash from a black hole. When a star is disrupted by a black hole in the nucleus of a galaxy, its debris is inevitably attracted and absorbed by the black hole. This sudden increase in the accretion rate causes an abrupt burst of ultraviolet and X-ray light because the gas from the disrupted star becomes very hot. As the high-energy radiation travels through the core of the galaxy it illuminates surrounding matter and so makes it possible to probe regions of the galaxy that would otherwise be unobservable. How information escapes from a black hole

If a black hole eats a book, what happens to the information? The latest work from a team of physicists says that in the distant future, the black hole eventually spits out the book's full contents. Even a black hole can't destroy information.

New iPhone 3G

We’ve all been hearing a million different things about this “new” iPhone that is suppose to be coming out any day now! I recently spoke to one of my friends who works at AT&T and I guess the new gossip going around is that the new iPhone is going to be cheaper than the original. I don’t know about you guys, but I find this hard to believe. The 3G is suppose to be faster, have GPS, a new glossy black cover (that is said to be color changeable), slightly thicker, updated software and the camera is expected to be better. I’m sure there will be a ton more things that will be changed or newly added to the new iPhone, so it’s a little strange that Apple would make the new iPhone less expensive...Especially, because people are going to buy it no matter how much it is.

New iPhone? - New on MacOpinion

Everyone seems convinced Steve Jobs will announce a new iPhone next week at WWDC and the speculation is wild as to what new features it will include: 3G cellular support, GPS, new design, etc. While I'll admit the evidence is strong that a new phone will be introduced -- one cannot ignore the low supply of the current model or indicators like AT&T's "no June/July vacations" memo to staff -- I am not convinced this new phone will be radically different from the current model.

David Black, New York Paintings

Denise Bibro Fine Art, 529 West 20th Street, 4W, Chelsea, NYC, is pleased to present David Black: New York Paintings. The artists first solo exhibition with the gallery, featuring seventeen vibrant, humorous, and playful depictions of city life, as well as a group of enchanting black and white engravings, will be on view May 8th through the 31st, 2008. The New York Paintings capture the citys boundless energy and evidence the artists love for his birthplace. The canvases hum with color and entertain with incisive wit. Whether portraying the social elite dining at the Plaza, canine enthusiasts at the Westminster Kennel Club Show, chess players lingering over a game at Washington Square Parks famed tables, or crowds reveling at the Greenwich Village Halloween parade, Black inserts humor, irony, and generally pokes fun.

Why the LHC Won't Destroy the World

An anonymous reader writes "Most people are aware of the recent articles contending that the Large Hadron Collider at CERN might destroy the world. While most scientists have no such concerns, a recent preprint released to arxiv systematically dismantles the notion. The gist of the argument is this: Everything that will be created at the LHC is already being created by cosmic rays. If a black hole created by the LHC is interactive enough to destroy the world within the lifetime of the sun, similar black holes are already being created by cosmic rays. Such black holes would be stopped by dense cosmic objects (neutron stars and white dwarfs). A black hole stopped in one of these objects would eventually absorb it. We see sufficiently old neutron stars in the sky, thus any black hole that could be created at the LHC, even if it is stable, wo

Mervyns to Open Five New Stores, Launch E-Commerce Site

Hayward, Calif.-based Mervyns announced plans to open five new stores, sell certain other locations and launch an e-commerce Web site. Mervyns said it plans to open five new stores in its core markets in 2009, bringing the total number of new Mervyns stores to 17 since the company was acquired by its private-equity owners three years ago. Mervyns reported it has engaged DJM Realty LLC to sell five-10 underperforming stores. The real estate portfolio transition is expected to generate $25 million to $50 million in cash to fund operations and new growth initiatives. The company will launch a fully integrated e-commerce Web site in the fourth quarter of 2008. Mervyns said the e-commerce Web site presents a new growth vehicle and multichannel opportunity for existing and new customers nationwide, and forecasts that the online platform could g

This diagram shows a comparison of the sizes and strangely elliptical shapes of the orbits of the pulsar J1903+0327 and its possible Sun-like companion star with the orbit of the Earth around the Sun. The sizes of the Sun and the possible companion star have been exaggerated by a factor of about 10, while that of the Earth has been exaggerated by a factor of about 1000. The pulsar, with its magnetic field and beams of radiation, is too large by a factor of about 100,000. Credit: Bill Saxton, NRAO/AUI/NSF

Amazon.com Sues New York State over New Tax Law

Amazon.com sued the state of New York and its governor over its new tax law, called by some the "Amazon Tax." The law claims that Internet retailers with affiliates residing in New York must collect New York sales tax because those affiliates count as a physical presence, a claim Amazon rejects.

How to Escape From a Black Hole

According to Einstein's theory of general relativity, black holes are regions of space where gravity is so strong that not even light can escape. And in the 1970's physicist Stephen Hawking asserted that any information sucked inside a black hole would be permanently lost. But now, researchers at Penn State have shown that information can be recovered from black holes.
