As if the mysteries of dark matter and dark energy weren't vexing enough, another baffling cosmic puzzle has been discovered.

SPACE: Chinese Space Walkers Stalk The Space Station

November 3, 2008: On September 27th, a Chinese Shenzhou space capsule came within 45 kilometers of the International Space Station, and two of the three crewmen made the first Chinese space walk (going outside the spacecraft in their space suits.) Later, a small, 88 pound microsatellite (the BX-1) was released from the Shenzhou. This was supposed to be a science experiment, but the fact that the Shenzhou came so close to the International Space Station, and then released a smaller, maneuverable (via small gas jets) BX-1, indicated another satellite destruction drill. The BX-1 could easily have been directed at the nearby space station, and destroyed it.

"Dark Flow" Outside Observable Universe

DynaSoar writes "NASA astrophysicists have discovered what they claim is something outside the observable universe exerting an effect on the observable. The material is pulling clusters of galaxies towards a region of space known not to contain sufficient matter to create the effect. They can only speculate on what the material is and how space might differ there: 'In these regions, space-time might be very different, and likely doesn't contain stars and galaxies (which only formed because of the particular density pattern of mass in our bubble). It could include giant, massive structures much larger than anything in our own observable universe. These structures are what researchers suspect are tugging on the galaxy clusters, causing the dark flow.

Concerns over eBay's New Fixed-Price Changes

eBay sellers who wanted to launch listings in the new 30-day Fixed-Price format on Tuesday were disappointed to learn that many listing tools did not yet support the new format - including eBay's own Turbo Lister. eBay made available a new version of the software with the new functionality at 4:15 pm Eastern, 13 hours after eBay launched the new format on the site. Sellers must upgrade to the new version of the software if they wish to use it to list in the new format.

The ISS Marks 10 Years In Space

"On 20 November 1998, a Russian Proton rocket lifted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome for a historic mission: It was carrying the first module of the International Space Station ISS, named Zarya (Russian for 'dawn'). This cargo and control module, which weighs about 20 tonnes and is almost 13 meters long, provides electrical power, propulsion, flight path guidance and storage space. The launch of the module... heralded a new era in space exploration, as, for the first time ever, lasting cooperation in space was achieved between Russia, the US, Europe, Canada and Japan. Over the next ten years, many other modules were brought into orbit, and ISS developed into the largest human outpost in space.

A Russian Soyuz spacecraft carrying American space tourist Richard Garriott and a new crew for the International Space Station docked at orbiting laboratory early Tuesday, where three astronauts were eagerly awaiting their arrival inside.

New State of Matter Could Extend Moore's Law

rennerik writes "Scientists at McGill University in Montreal say they've discovered a new state of matter that could help extend Moore's Law and allow for the fabrication of more tightly packed transistors, or a new kind of transistor altogether. The researchers call the new state of matter 'a quasi-three-dimensional electron crystal.' It was discovered using a device cooled to a temperature about 100 times colder than intergalactic space, following the application of the most powerful continuous magnetic field on Earth."

Sony Patents New Game Controller

Rumors of a new Sony PlayStation 3 controller have be circling for awhile now. This week, the new controller is one step closer to seeing the light of day with Sony registering a patent for a "new, break-apart controller with advanced motion-sensing technology." Most suprising of all is that the rumored design looks nothing like the PS3's current Sixaxis controller. The new controller design consists of two Wii-like remotes with large glowing spheres at the end, which can be used separately or connected in a variety of configurations. The PlayStation Eye camera will be able to determine the controllers' positions in three-dimensional space thanks to LEDs and ultrasonic sound emitters within the spheres. Gaming companies often come up with bizarre patents that never come to light, so only time will tell if this new controller actually gets

Apple Announces New MacBook, Pro, Air

Steve Jobs just got through announcing new MacBook lines in Cupertino. The MacBook, the Pro, and the Air all got revved. The old line of plastic-body MacBooks drops in price by $100, to $999. The new MacBooks have a metal body and multi-touch trackpad, just like the new Pros. The Pro features two NVidia graphics chips. Quoting Jobs: "With the 9400M, you get 5 hours of battery life, with the 9600M GT you get four hours of battery life. You choose." In summary: "We're building both [MacBook and Pro] in a whole new way. From a slab of aluminum to a notebook. New graphics. New trackpad, the best we've ever built. And LED-backlit displays that are far brighter, instant on, far more environmentally responsible." They are shipping today and should be in stores tomorrow.

Canon Kicks Out New Camera Models; 5D MkII Shoots Full HD Video

Canon has been relatively quiet on new releases recently, with cameras such as Nikon's D90 grabbing some attention. Canon set that straight today by announcing some new models, which included the revamped EOS 5D MkII. The new 5D is obviously aimed at the high end of the market with its 21.1 megapixel sensor and $2,699 price tag come November (body only). It also goes a step further than the D90 (which can record 720p video), by offering a 1080p video mode. If you want to get down to the nitty gritty, then dpreview has a nice preview article for you. Canon also announced some new compact models today, including another camera capable of full HD video, the SX1 IS. There were also new additions to the Powershot range, and the SX10 IS and G10.
