Mind the Gap - VLT instrument hints at the presence of planets in young gas discs

Astronomers have been able to study planet-forming discs around young Sun-like stars in unsurpassed detail, clearly revealing the motion and distribution of the gas in the inner parts of the disc. This result, which possibly implies the presence of giant planets, was made possible by the combination of a very clever method enabled by ESO's Very Large Telescope.

Instrument hints at the presence of planets in gas disks

Astronomers have been able to study planet-forming disks around young Sun-like stars in unsurpassed detail, clearly revealing the motion and distribution of the gas in the inner parts of the disk. This result, which possibly implies the presence of giant planets, was made possible by the combination of a very clever method enabled by European Southern Observatory's (ESO) Very Large Telescope in Chile.

App Cubby introduces Gas Cubby 1.0 for iPhone and iPod Touch

App Cubby is introducing their new Gas Cubby 1.0, a gas mileage and vehicle maintenance app for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Gas Cubby will save money and help keep any vehicle operating at its peak. With a focus on ease-of-use, Gas Cubby supports multiple vehicles, and offers excellent charts for miles-per-gallon (MPG), gas price, gas expenses, as well as service expenses. Advanced searching and filtering allow for in depth analysis and will automatically generate new charts based on the filtered data. Users may store vehicle data, such as VIN, license plate, and insurance policy. Among Gas Cubby’s most helpful features are its customizable service reminders.

Earth-like Planets May Be Easier To Find Than Previously Thought: Young Planets Stay Hotter Longer

Hot, young planets may be easier to spot because they stay that way longer than astronomers have thought, according to new work by MIT planetary scientist Linda Elkins-Tanton.

iPhone's Gas Cubby Car Care Tracker Is Anal So You Don't Have To Be

We played with Gas Cubby, the car maintenance tracking tool for iPhone, and can say that the $5 is a pretty low price to pay if you really want to keep your ride in good condition. Among its many hardcore features are gas price fill-up tracking and graphing, service tracking and data (insurance, VIN) storage. We all know that we're supposed to get and document regular service on our cars, but who the hell remembers? By tracking your gas purchases (which you get much more frequently), Gas Cubby will remind you of when those tires need rotating or when filters need replacement. Pretty damn good for $5, I'd say. Juno Spacecraft to Study Jupiter

For generations, astronomers have argued over how the planets in our solar system were formed. Today, most theories assume that planets were formed in a nebula of gas and dust that condensed around what eventually became our sun, but there is still great disagreement over details, particularly for gas giant planets like Jupiter: Did a small core form first around which each planet condensed, or did instability in the nebula cause pockets to collapse directly into planets?

Astronomers Trace Gas Emissions Close To Young Stellar Objects

Astronomers have used ESO's Very Large Telescope Interferometer to conduct the first high resolution survey that combines spectroscopy and interferometry on intermediate-mass infant stars. They obtained a very precise view of the processes acting in the discs that feed stars as they form. These mechanisms include material infalling onto the star as well as gas being ejected, probably as a wind from the disc.

SPACEExtrasolar Planets Get Spot in Hubble Photo Album

Two teams of astronomers have captured what may be the first photos of planets outside ours solar system. In the past, astronomers have determined the presence of over 300 exoplanets, but they did so indirectly by measuring factors like gravity, speed or light around stars. However, not all scientists are convinced that the photos are a first -- or that they even show planets at all.

NYC Rocker Tim Young releases free "Kerouac" MP3

"Listening to 'Keroauc' by Tim Young Band feels like a cross-country adventure that harkens back to the esteemed Beat writer Jack Kerouac, of whom the song refers to. In the song's video, Young is seen playing guitar all over the city of New York on street corners and sidewalks. Young appears to be having a blast - and rightly so. 'Kerouac' is a highly enjoyable song that will conjure up thoughts of hitting the road with only a notebook in hand, just like Jack did so many years ago."

POLYESTER CONTAINER WITH ENHANCED GAS BARRIER AND METHOD [European Patents]

Inventor(s) SHI, Yu SCHIAVONE, Robert, J. WALTERS, Chantel KRIEGEL, Robert HUANG, Xiaoyan Title POLYESTER CONTAINER WITH ENHANCED GAS BARRIER AND METHOD Abstract A polyester container with enhanced gas barrier properties comprises a polyester composition having an IV of 0.65 dL/g to 1.0 dL/g and comprising a polyester and a reactive organic gas barrier enhancing additive. The polyester is made using at least one first polycondensation catalyst selected from the group consisting of metals in Groups 3, 4, 13, and 14 of the Periodic Table and comprises a catalyst residue remaining in the polyester from formation of the polyester. The catalyst residue comprises at least a portion of the at least one first polycondensation catalyst. If you would like to purchase a copy of this patent, please call MicroPatent at 800-648-6787.

The first pictures of not 1, not 2, but 3 planets orbiting a star

A team of astronomers used the Keck and Gemini North telescopes on Mauna Kea in Hawaii to discover three planets in orbit around the young star HR 8799. Christian Marois (the lead author of a paper to be published in Science) and his collaborators developed an advanced computer processing technique that helped separate the planets from the much brighter light of the star. HR 8799 is located about 130 light-years from Earth and is just visible to the naked eye in the constellation of Pegasus.

Kufuor urged to pass copyright legislative instrument

Accra, Nov. 5, GNA - The Musicians Union of Ghana, Film Producers Association, Association of Writers, Book Publishers Association, Association of Phonogram Industry and the Ghana Actors Guild on Wednesday called on President John Agyekum Kufuor to pass the copyright legislative instrument as a parting legacy to Ghanaians. The groups, in a joint press statement to Ghana News Agency in Accra said the passage of the legislative instrument would give the Copyright Act 2005 (Act 690) the legalized based for implementation. The groups noted that due to the delay in the passage of the legislative instrument, the government and stakeholders in the industry were losing huge sums of revenue and income due to activities of pirates who took undue advantage of the environment to engage in illegal activities.
