LHC Doomsday Lawsuit Finally Dismissed by Hawaii Judge

It's official, the LHC lawsuit has been dismissed. After seven months of hype, media frenzy and hysteria about the non-existent risk associated with the Large Hadron Collider, Federal Judge Helen Gillmor said her Honolulu court lacked jurisdiction over the European-based CERN particle accelerator. This decision may have been a long-time coming, but at least we can all look forward to spring 2009's delayed LHC experiments without a fantastical lawsuit hanging over the proceedings.

A lawsuit against Apple and AT&T over the limited life of the iPhone's non-user-replaceable battery has been dismissed. US District Judge Matthew Kennelly said in a summary judgment issued this week that Apple disclosed right on the outside of the iPhone box that the battery has "limited recharge cycles" and may eventually need to be replaced by a service provider. Therefore, no jury could take the case seriously and therefore it was dropped.

    LAHORE: Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed of the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday allowed the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to issue notifications of fresh electricity tariffs, but barred it from implementing the same to the extent of over a 100 textile mills and industrial units which have moved the LHC. The judge adjourned the hearing until November 11. The All Pakistan Textile Mills Association counsel Syed Ali Zafar told the court that tariff determination was an open procedure and an opportunity of a hearing must be provided to all stakeholders. The judge dismissed their complaint of competition by a governmental organization. Quoting: "The judge's ruling is noteworthy for two things: (1) the judge's complete dismissal of Bridgewater Telephone Company's complaint and (2) his obvious anger at the underfunding of Minnesota's state courts. Indeed, the longest footnote in the opinion is an extended jeremiad about how much work judges are under and why it took so long to decide this case."

    Panic grips LHC after bomb hoax

    LAHORE: Panic gripped litigants and lawyers present at the Lahore High Court (LHC) when the bomb disposal squad (BDS) started searching for explosives on Thursday afternoon. The BDS arrived at the court after the police emergency help line received a telephone call about the presence of a bomb in the LHC, the Anarkali Police Station house officer (SHO) said, adding that the LHC security staff and the BDS had been informed about the call. However, no explosive material was found during the two-hour search operation. The SHO said that the police were trying to trace the unidentified caller who had made the hoax call through telephone number 0345-7082042. However, he added, the number had been switched off. Security personnel deployed at the LHC became more vigilant after the hoax call.

    CERN Launches Huge LHC Computing Grid

    RaaVi writes "Yesterday CERN launched the largest computing grid in the world, which is destined to analyze the data coming from world's biggest particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider. The computing grid consists of more than 140 computer centers from around the world working together to handle the expected 10-15 petabytes of data the LHC will generate each year." The Worldwide LHC Computing Grid will initially handle data for up to 7,000 scientists around the world. Though the LHC itself is down for some lengthy repairs, an event called GridFest was held yesterday to commemorate the occasion. The LCG will run alongside the LHC@Home volunteer project.
