French railway network operator Reseau Ferre de France (RFF) has signed a public-private partnership contract with Synerail, a joint venture between Vinci, SFR, AXA Private Equity and TDF. The EUR 1 billion deal calls for the construction and operation for 15 years of a GSM-R telecommunications network to be fully deployed by 2015 over 14,000 km of tracks. The contract value is split more or less equally between capital expenditure on one hand, and operating and maintenance expenditure on the other. It is the biggest public-private partnership contract signed in France to date. RFF states that financing will be provided by Synerail's shareholders as well as a group of banks led by Credit Agricole. When RFF shortlisted four groups for the contract in May 2007 it said it expected to declare a winner in 2008.

(PhysOrg.com) -- A design student, frustrated at having his brand new wafer-thin laptop scratched by the unwieldy and bulky plug attached to it, set about re-designing the standard British 3-pin plug that has remained unchanged for over six decades, and invented a plug that folds to a mere one centimeter thickness.

We've been impressed with the take-up of our galleries system, with over 120,000 images uploaded so far, but have been looking for ways to make it even more accessible to photographers. To this end, we have created an uploader plug-in for Adobe's Lightroom 2 raw processing and workflow tool. The plug-in adds to Lightroom's 'export' tab, letting you set your output specifications and configure the permissions for the images once on the site. The plug-in is a beta at present, with more functions to come.

RSS feeds have pretty much remained the same way as when they first made it big, and reading all those feeds could prove to be a bore. Google intends to spice things up a bit with their new service known as Google Reader Play, where similar to Stumbleupon, it offers you an alternative method of browsing interesting news on the Internet. Items will be presented one at a time in Google Reader Play in a big format, taking up the entire screen. Once you have read it, click the next arrow to move on, and so on and so forth. Users might realize that Google Reader Play is based on the same technology found in Recommended Items in Google Reader, where it will automatically attempt to search the most popular stuff that appeals to you (as well as what turns you off), as long as you won't mind it "reading" into your mind initially.

Call it Slingbox for games. Spawn Labs lets you take a console game and play it over the web on a laptop or a computer. As the Slingbox does with video, you can place shift your games and play them in high-definition on any computer, said David Wilson, chief executive at the Austin-based company. While the game is actually running on a console, you can interact with it and view it on a display on a far away laptop, as long as you have a broadband connection. You have to buy a $199 Spawn HD-720 box to make it work. Inside the box are digital signal processing chips that can take game images, convert them into video and play them on any computer screen. You interact with the game and send the signals back to the game console, which then sends the results of the interaction back to your screen.

The Mozilla developers have released a second Firefox 4.0 preview, labelled "3.7 alpha 2", which includes out-of-process plug-in support on Windows and Linux for more reliable browsing. With out-of-process plug-ins, when a plug-in crashes, it crashes in it's own process, which is outside of the browser process, allowing the browser to gracefully handle the plug-in crash rather than crashing itself.
