Working Offline With Google Docs: related news

Google intros offline access to Google Docs...

Google today took a step towards competing with Office and other production apps by enabling an offline version of Google Docs, its web-based work suite. The update uses Google's Gears platform to take most of the user's content offline. In addition to saving the workspace for use without an Internet connection, Docs also saves the customer's stored documents for editing later. Updates are re-synchronized with the server once the Internet connection comes back, Google says.

Working Offline With Google Docs

Google recently added a welcome feature to Google Docs, its free Web-based office productivity tool set, which includes word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation apps. It's called Google Docs Offline, and as its name suggests, the feature enables you to edit Google documents without being connected to the Internet.

Google lets users access Web-based documents offline

Google, bolstering competition with Microsoft, is letting users of its Internet-based word-processing program access their documents offline. A desktop version of Google Docs, now available to a few users, will be rolled out more broadly over the next few weeks, the Mountain View company said Tuesday in a blog posting. While offline access is offered only in English for now, the company is working on other languages. Google is upgrading its Web-based programs in an effort to take customers from Microsoft, which dominates the personal-computer software market. With offline access, Google Docs customers can use the Internet-based program and automatically save their work to a PC, so it's available on airplanes and other places where they can't connect to the Web.

Google Docs pulls head out of the cloud, goes offline

For users who rely on productivity apps to get them through the day, one major advantage that desktop apps have over online suites is that they are accessible at any time or any place—no Internet connection needed. Google is moving towards eliminating that barrier, however, by allowing Google Docs to be used offline. That's right—thanks to offline storage, users can now access their online documents while stuck in pockets of offline hell (such as on an airplane). Or, as Google Docs software engineer Philip Tucker puts it, users can now bring the "cloud" with them.

Google Docs Aims At Microsoft Office Live

mikesd81 writes "Channel News reports that Google took an important step forward Monday in its rivalry with Microsoft Office Live, reporting that Google Docs will allow users to edit word processing documents offline. Google said users of its Google Docs word processing application can use Google Gears to save and then edit documents without being connected to the Internet. 'The offline capability will be limited to word processing documents, though the company plans to add it to spreadsheets and presentations in the future.'"

Google disconnected and Microsoft connected

Yesterday, Google announced that it was rolling out functionality to enable Google Docs to work offline - Google Docs Offline (GDO). This allows documents to be viewed and edited offline, and to be re-synchronised when a network connection is restored. All of this is enabled by Google Gears - an open source browser extension. Offline access to presentations and spreadsheets is not yet provided but is likely to follow.

Google Word Docs Can Be Used Offline -- Like MS Word

Moving closer to desktop competition with Microsoft Office, Google has announced that its Google Docs word-processing documents can be edited offline and automatically synchronized online. The offline editing is made possible by the Google Gears browser plug-in. Google Gears does not yet support sync with presentations or spreadsheets.

Download Google's Help Files for Offline Access

google.jpgGoogle is adding offline access to a variety of its services — Google Reader and some of Google Apps are available offline — but what about support? You can download your feeds and read them offline, but suppose you have a question about how to use a feature in Google Reader? As it turns out it's pretty easy to grab Google's documentation and keep a local copy.

Google Scoops Microsoft w/ Mesh Applications

Julie188 writes "Google's offline access for Google Apps is a kick in the shin at Ray Ozzie. Google took a page right out of the Ozzie mesh playbook when it announced the offline access (let's call it Google Docs Unplugged). Google delivered desktop apps from the cloud first and then added unplugged functionality. Microsoft wants to do the same, but in reverse, and faces an infinitely bigger challenge: rebuild Microsoft apps so they can become cloud enabled while pulling its giant channel (and embedded software) along in the process. Good luck with that, Microsoft. But then again, just because Google is making faster progress doesn't mean much. There's no guarantee users will like the unplugged versions of cloud apps."

The Tools Google Uses Internally

A web seminar Google held yesterday at KMWorld Magazine offered a great deal of insight into how Google manages projects and communication internally. The presentation by Google followed an employee through his first few weeks at the company, explaining the many tools he’s using: from the Google intranet MOMA, the Google Ideas site and Google Caribou Alpha, to Google Experts Search, “Googler Search,” and Google Apps. Following is a smaller excerpt of the large-size screenshots & info Google was showing in the 59-page presentation, with thanks to Brian – who has a wrap-up of the presentation as well as the full slides at his blog – for sending this in. KMWorld says the presentation will be archived at their site eventually, so perhaps if you register with them you might still be able to see the event.
