SecureThroughObscure writes "Security researcher Robert 'RSnake' Hansen discusses numerous concerns with Google's new Google Health application, which aims to integrate user's medical records online. We discussed Google Health's opening to the public earlier this week. RSnake mentions that Google has found a loophole allowing them to provide this service without having to follow HIPAA regulations, which, combined with Google's track record of having numerous flaws leading to private information disclosure, draws serious concern. Security researcher Nate McFeters of ZDNet's Zero-Day Security Blog also commented on the article, mentioning several past vulnerabilities: ownership of content issues, Google Docs theft, a cross-domain hole, Google XSS, and a Google Picasa protocol handler issue leading to the theft of user images.

On April 23rd, Google introduced new brand-image mobile search ads, a move that further extends the Internet giant's reach into the mobile Internet advertising bazaar. Google's new brand-image ads are scaled to fit the smaller screens of mobile devices. Google says the new mobile ads must link to Web sites optimized for mobile Internet use and that there is a limit of one display ad per page. The new mobile ads will be targeted to the mobile user's keyword search and will be offered as a cost-per-click to advertisers in 13 countries.

It appears the everyone's new favorite borg-like monolith corporation is taking it on the chin once again for overly aggressive go-to-market strategies. This time allegations have surfaced about how Google treats its technology partners, specifically with respect to IP infringement. Apparently Chicago-based company LimitNone is claiming Google's partnership with them, as a third party developer brought on to enhance Google products, went awry when they decided to just steal the small software company's technology. This technology was rolled into a Google Apps product that basically allows users to migrate their MS Outlook email and contacts into gMail products. I was never much for the annoying and persistent rumor that Google was going to become a national broadband provider. Every time the company bought fiber, hired a networking expert (like TCP/IP co-creator Vint Cerf) or invested in the 700Mhz auction -- people assumed they wanted to become Google, the ISP. The truth is that Google was always interested in just one thing: selling advertisements and beefing up their infrastructure. As additional proof: Now that Google has directly invested $500 million into the new Clearwire WiMax joint-venture, the company won't even be allowing the new company to piggyback on their vast fiber links.

Google's iGoogle portal is currently a simple tabbed affair, that allows you to add various widgets and change the theme of the page. With the newly proposed layout (which is being tested in a small number of randomly selected Google accounts), the page takes on some features more akin with social networking. The tabs now move to the left hand side and new features have been added. The chat feature from Gmail gets borrowed and used here, so you can talk to your online contacts, and options for sharing items will be easily added in future. The new iGoogle will also add a news feed in the same vain as that found on Facebook that shows updated information for contacts across various Google apps. You can have a peek at a couple of screenshots of the new layout, and more details here.

Wouldn't it be great to understand exactly how Google decides to rank websites? And wouldn't it be even better if the information on Google search rankings came from a true ''insider'' at Google? Well if the Google blog is to be believed, the company has begun an effort to do just that. Udi Manber, a Vice President of Engineering at Google is part of the team called 'Search Quality'. Search Quality is the name of the team responsible for the ranking of Google search results. That is, when you type a search query into the search box at Google and hit enter, the Search Quality team is responsible to decide within a fraction of a second which among the billions of pages on the web to display, and in what order.

CWmike writes "Preston Gralla has a decent idea that could move the office needle: If Google really wanted to deliver a knockout punch to Microsoft, it would integrate OpenOffice with Google Docs, and sell support for the combined suite to small businesses, medium-sized business, and large corporations. Given the reach of Google, the quality of OpenOffice, and the lure of free, it's a sure winner. Imagine if a version of it were available as a Web service from Google, combined with massive amounts of Google storage. Integrated with Google Docs, it would also allow online collaboration. For those who wanted more features, the full OpenOffice suite would be available as a client — supported by Google. wouldn't be at all surprised to see this happen.
