Google plans to expand its finance Web site by adding more historical data and company filings as it tries to gain ground on more-popular services from Yahoo and AOL. The company will also seek to improve its 2-year-old finance site by offering real-time stock prices from the New York Stock Exchange on a permanent basis after a four-month pilot started this week, said R.J. Pittman, director of product management. Google's finance pages had 2.07 million U.S. visitors last month, ranking 13th on researcher ComScore's list of top financial sites. The company plans to use its search technology to help users find data more efficiently, rather than adding editorial content to lure more users, Pittman said. In December 2007, Microsoft acquired MultiMap, which offers features that are focused on the UK, and created quite quite a stir when it accidentally forced UK users to use it over Live Maps. In mid-April, Ask UK made a surprising move when it switched away from its mapping service and decided to start using Multimap. Apple, maker of the iPod media player, said its iTunes online store has sold more than 5 billion songs since its debut five years ago as more fans abandon record shops for the Web. The site is the most popular in the United States for legal music downloads, with more than 8 million songs. ITunes customers also are renting or buying more than 50,000 movies a day, Apple said Thursday in a statement. Sales of CDs and music DVDs fell 13 percent to $15.9 billion last year, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry said yesterday. Sales of downloaded songs and mobile-phone ring tones rose 34 percent to $2.9 billion.

Lexico Publishing Group, a Long Beach-based firm that operates the Dictionary.com, Thesaurus.com, and Reference.com web sites, has been acquired by search provider Ask.com, in an all-cash deal. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Ask.com said that Lexico helps expand the firm's monthly unique visitors by 15.6M. Ask said that Lexico is profitbale, and has been seeing high double digit growth for the past two years. Lexico was founded in 1995 by Brian Kariger and Daniel Fierro. Ask.com is an operating unit of IAC.
