Roughly a year ago, local search engine optimization was all the rage--the new frontier in search engine marketing. For a while, it seemed that everyone was interested in the local search angle--even multi-national companies. However, for many companies selling products or services to the entire United States, or even globally, it seemed like a non-starter. Companies that counted on people looking for certain products or services that did not require close proximity to the company's location were unaffected. As far as local search engine optimization goes, things have changed a bit since then-- at least for some.

Google's Mac Team has released Visigami, an image search application and screen-saver. The open-source application, available under Apache license, can search from three different image sources, including Google Images, Picasa, and Flickr. From within the application, users can specify any image search query and images matching the search will start animating on the screen. According to the documentation, there are multiple ways of animating the images: fan, carousel, and grid as well as a few different camera views: fixed, autopan, and mouse pan. The screen-saver uses the same settings that were setup by the application, but the team says it is easier to tweak the settings in the application than to run the screen-saver. In addition, users also have the ability to use sliders to adjust settings such as display speed and zoom.

Microsoft and Powerset confirmed a deal that had been rumored for a few days. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the purchase of Powerset by Microsoft does offer some interesting insight into how Microsoft plans to grow its search business. Powerset is a pioneer in semantic search. Semantic search attempts to understand the meaning of the words users enter into the search engine, rather than simply targeting keywords. According to a story from IDG News Service, Powerset is currently testing a semantic search engine, in part using technology licensed from Xerox's PARC subsidiary. That technology creates a semantic representation of Web pages by parsing each sentence and extracting its meaning.
