Symbian: We'll Work With Google

Symbian said it is willing to expand its relationship with Google, including sharing information down to the operating system level. Symbian was recently bought out by Nokia, with the intention of merging the current versions of Symbian and opening up the source code and licensing it for free as the new Symbian Foundation. Symbian said it is already working with Google on some levels, but would be interested in providing more information to Google at the application and operating system levels so that better end products and services can be developed.

Symbian Happy To Collaborate With Google

Android developers and Google (NSDQ: GOOG) engineers may be frustrated with how Google’s mobile platform is developing, but it seems that its mythic powers to inspire fear in its competitors haven’t waned a bit. Today in Tokyo, Nigel Clifford, chief executive of Symbian, whose software powers some 60 percent of all smartphones, told a group of reporters that it would be “happy to collaborate” with Google, reports Reuters. Indeed, Clifford noted that Symbian already works with Google by putting its map applications and search engine on its platforms. Further collaboration between the two “could be on the application level or…could be on the more fundamental operating system level,” mused Clifford. In June Nokia (NYSE: NOK) announced it was buying the rest of Symbian it didn’t already own and would give it away for free.

Google's Big Mistake - Getting Rid of Google Page Creator

Are you kidding me? Google getting rid of Google Page Creator, this must be a joke. No, it's for real. Google says they're going to be transitioning all Google Page Creator websites into their new Google Sites. Excuse me, but Google Sites doesn't come close to being as good as Google Page Creator. Why in the world would Google choose to keep the lesser of the two?

Nokia's Symbian Move Helps Google

Google benefits if its applications come preinstalled on a phone. Being the default search engine on Apple's iPhone has helped Google dominate the nascent U.S. mobile search market, with 61 percent share, according to Nielsen Mobile. But many users will rely on Google even if it's not the default on a given phone, analysts and investors say."

Symbian Foundation Formed, Symbian OS, S60, and UIQ Going Open Source

Earlier today Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, and NTT DoCoMo announced that they are planning to turn the Symbian smartphone OS and its user interfaces into one royalty-free and, eventually, open source platform. In order to do that, Nokia has announced that it will be purchasing the remaining shares of Symbian that it does not already own from the other Symbian partners and will contribute the Symbian operating system, as well as its S60 user interface, to a new non-profit organization called the Symbian Foundation. Sony Ericsson and Motorola will, in turn, donate their UIQ assets while Japan's NTT DoCoMo will hand over its own MOAP(S) platform to the foundation.

Nokia to Acquire and Open Source Symbian

zyzko writes "Nokia has placed an offer on Symbian stock — it currently owns a 48% share and intends to buy the other shareholders out, 91% of the stockholders have already agreed. The press has already labeled this as an countermeasure to fight Android. Nokia has also created Symbian foundation — it might mean more open Symbian." Symbian is "currently the world's dominant smartphone operating system (206 million phones shipped, 18.5 million in Q1 2008)," writes reader thaig, who points out coverage in the Economic Times. If this deal goes through as expected, the Foundation says that selected components of the Symbian operating system would be made available as open source at launch under the Eclipse Public License (EPL) 1.0 , with the rest of the platform following over the next two years.

Symbian open to OS level cooperation with Google

Earlier today smartphone OS marker Symbian's CEO, Nigel Clifford, said that his company was willing "collaborate" further with Google. Symbian's CEO noted that his company already works with Google on an application level by including Google's services in Symbian based smartphones. He then added that Symbian would be open to additional cooperation, even on a "fundamental operating system level."

Google URL Index Hits 1 Trillion

mytrip points out news that Google's index of unique URLs has reached a milestone: one trillion. Google's blog provides some more information, noting, "The first Google index in 1998 already had 26 million pages, and by 2000 the Google index reached the one billion mark. Over the last eight years, we've seen a lot of big numbers about how much content is really out there. To keep up with this volume of information, our systems have come a long way since the first set of web data Google processed to answer queries. Back then, we did everything in batches: one workstation could compute the PageRank graph on 26 million pages in a couple of hours, and that set of pages would be used as Google's index for a fixed period of time. Today, Google downloads the web continuously, collecting updated page information and re-processing the entire web-l

MS, Yahoo! and Google

The ladies and (especially) gentlemen of Microsoft, Yahoo! and Google trooped into the US Congress to inform US politicians about how good and how bad and how anti-competitive the Yahoo!-Google advert deal is; Yahoo! got things off with a joke by their lawyer Michael Callahan that was pretty funny but disrespectful: ''With all due respect to Google, we have every expectation of fighting them and winning;'' Brad Smith, Microsoft solicitor, explained to the congresspeople that if search is the key to the Internet, as ''many'' believe, then ''this deal will put Google in a position to own that gateway and the information that flows through it''; so it's probably fair to say that when Microsoft takes over Yahoo!, this deal will follow the dodo and other extinct species.
