Stony Stevenson writes "Google presents a big fat target for would-be hackers and attackers. At the RSA conference Google offered security professionals a look at its internal security systems. Scott Petry, director of Google's Enterprise and founder of security firm Postini, explained how the company handles constant pressure and scrutiny from attackers. In order to keep its products safe, Google has adopted a philosophy of 'security as a cultural value.' The program includes mandatory security training for developers, a set of in-house security libraries, and code reviews by both Google developers and outside security researchers."

A web seminar Google held yesterday at KMWorld Magazine offered a great deal of insight into how Google manages projects and communication internally. The presentation by Google followed an employee through his first few weeks at the company, explaining the many tools he’s using: from the Google intranet MOMA, the Google Ideas site and Google Caribou Alpha, to Google Experts Search, “Googler Search,” and Google Apps. Following is a smaller excerpt of the large-size screenshots & info Google was showing in the 59-page presentation, with thanks to Brian – who has a wrap-up of the presentation as well as the full slides at his blog – for sending this in. KMWorld says the presentation will be archived at their site eventually, so perhaps if you register with them you might still be able to see the event.

On Monday, May 12th, Google released a preview of a new service that will allow web sites that are not intrinsically social to add social networking features to their sites. The service called Google Friend Connect will give any web site owner a snippet of code to add to their site so that social networking features will run immediately without the hassles of programming. The code works by allowing a visitor to sign in to the Google Friend Connect web site using a log-in and password from an email or social network account to which he or she is already registered and has stored contacts (sites include Facebook, Google, Yahoo!, hi5, orkut, Plaxo, and more). Once signed in, the visitor gives the site permission to retrieve his/her profile and friends list from that account so that he or she can see, invite, and interact with friends on the

Under 18? No Google for you. In what has to be one of the weirdest news items I've read recently, Google's Terms of Service prohibit any person under the age of 18 from utilizing any Google Web properties. So that means no searching, no YouTube, no Gmail. At issue here is Google's stance that a person under 18 is not capable of signing a binding contract - and that apparently you need a contract to search the Internet. Logically, if you have to be 18 to use Google's properties, you'd have to be 18 to have a Myspace page, right? Nope - Myspace only requires users to be 16 to publicly post their "preferences", religion, and those awesome pictures of that party at that kid's house when his parents were out of town. Facebook? 13. What makes this even more odd is that Google is sponsoring an art contest - Doodle 4 Google - for students K-12, w

Google started a service that lets outside developers of Web software store their programs on its computers for free, seeking to match similar offerings from rivals such as Amazon.com. The trial service, begun Monday, reached its limit of 10,000 developers Tuesday, Google said in an e-mail. Each application will get a restricted amount of storage on Google's servers and enough processing power for up to 5 million page views. Google, the most popular search engine, is seeking new sources of revenue as growth in the number of people clicking on its Internet ads slows. Researcher ComScore said last month that clicks on Google's sponsored links rose 3 percent in February from a year earlier and were unchanged in January, after a 25 percent increase in the fourth quarter of 2007.

Google, bolstering competition with Microsoft, is letting users of its Internet-based word-processing program access their documents offline. A desktop version of Google Docs, now available to a few users, will be rolled out more broadly over the next few weeks, the Mountain View company said Tuesday in a blog posting. While offline access is offered only in English for now, the company is working on other languages. Google is upgrading its Web-based programs in an effort to take customers from Microsoft, which dominates the personal-computer software market. With offline access, Google Docs customers can use the Internet-based program and automatically save their work to a PC, so it's available on airplanes and other places where they can't connect to the Web.

Google is seeing a massive increase in mobile internet devices using their services (reports Reuters). And while the obvious answer is 'people are using the web on their phones!' I don't think that's the case. More like Google has signed enough deals for search plug-ins and 'go on, set Google as the browsers default homepage' that they are grabbing a bigger share of existing traffic.
