Microsoft (News - Alert) (NASDAQ:MSFT) dominates the lucrative world of software, and it's number one of just a handful of giants in the high-margin world of creating the software that runs servers for businesses. But these days there are few things more important from Microsoft in Redmond, Wash. to Buzz (OTC:BZTG) in Phuket, Thailand, than becoming a digital advertising powerhouse and take some of Google's (News - Alert) 80% and growing Market Share. Microsoft was willing to go so far as to spend $47.5 billion to buy Yahoo! (Nasdaq:YHOO). The company walked away from that deal on May 3 when Yahoo held out for more.

Microsoft (News - Alert) Corp.(NASDAQ:MSFT) is still trying to team up with Yahoo Inc.(NASDAQ:YHOO) to challenge Internet search and advertising leader Google Inc.(NASDAQ:GOOG), although at this point the renewed talks haven't escalated to another attempt to take over Yahoo. This week we have seen Google (News - Alert) pass Yahoo as the world's most visited website. Buzz (OTC:BZTG) has caught up substantially on competitors in Asia and made enormous ground in China and looks set to challenge Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU) as Asia's favourite web destination in the near future.

Three years ago, reporter Tom Foremski tossed out his idea for how Microsoft could kill Google in an underhanded way: offer $100 million to whoever clicked on a random Google ad. The trick would be that no one (other than the person administering the prize at Microsoft) would know what the ad is. Foremski's theory was that this would lead to massive clickfraud and anger from Google advertisers. Of course, there are a lot of assumptions in there that likely wouldn't hold up in a real world test (with the biggest being that the whole deal would stop working the second someone "won"). However, now we've got Mark Cuban tossing out a suggestion for how to take down Google that seems to come from the same "wishful thinking" playbook. Cuban's idea is that Microsoft (with Yahoo) should offer to pay the top 100,000 sites in Google to get them to r

Microsoft lost Internet search users in the United States to Google and former takeover target Yahoo last month, research firm ComScore said. Microsoft, the world's biggest software maker, handled 8.5 percent of queries in May, down from 9.1 percent the month before, Reston, Va.-based ComScore said Thursday in a statement. Google extended its lead to 61.8 percent, and Yahoo grew to 20.6 percent, ComScore said. The companies are vying for a bigger piece of the $41 billion online advertising market. Microsoft's talks to buy Yahoo's search business for $1 billion ended last week, around the time Yahoo struck a deal to show some Google ads on its search pages. Microsoft's proposal would have included an $8 billion investment in Yahoo. Google handled 61.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP): Microsoft Corp’s abandoned takeover bid for Yahoo Inc. appears to have culminated with a disheartening thud for those two companies but amounted to yet another coup for online search leader Google Inc. What began in January as Microsoft’s most audacious attack yet on Google instead paved the way for the Internet’s most powerful company to gain even more clout through a deal that gives Google access to a large chunk of Yahoo’s advertising space. By submitting to a partnership that endorses Google’s search advertising technology as a better choice than its own, Yahoo is giving online marketers even more incentive to spend most of their money with its biggest rival, according to industry analysts. It looks like such a sweet deal for Google that the US Justice Department and lawmakers are expected to take a hard look at th

Google today sped ahead in the web search domain once again with the release of the Google Earth API. Yes, the recent improvements to Live Maps were impressive, but today the search giant has put Google Earth into the browser. Microsoft made this move first, completely disregarding Google's client release of Google Earth, with its Virtual Earth API and browser plug-in. Google's Windows-only release today seems to focus on 3D, and speed. The performance is noticeably superior to Microsoft's, but there are still obvious kinks that need to be worked out.

CWmike writes "Linda Rosencrance reports that despite assurances from Google and Yahoo that their online advertising deal doesn't need regulatory approval, the two companies should not be too quick to dismiss Microsoft's influence on Capitol Hill. Andrew Frank, an analyst at Gartner, said both Yahoo and Google will benefit from the deal, but he also said Microsoft will do everything in its power to bring the arrangement to a screeching halt. 'Expect Microsoft to challenge it and come back aggressively with some search plans of its own,' he said. Rob Enderle, of the Enderle Group, said Microsoft is a formidable opponent and knows how to play politics. 'Without Microsoft, this probably would stand up to regulatory scrutiny,' Enderle said. 'But Microsoft has increased its presence on Capitol Hill significantly .

While not that unusual, since most agencies work with those systems anyway, Publicis wants to formally identify the relationships it has with these companies and how it plans to tightly coordinate its campaigns across these platforms.

CWmike writes "Preston Gralla has a decent idea that could move the office needle: If Google really wanted to deliver a knockout punch to Microsoft, it would integrate OpenOffice with Google Docs, and sell support for the combined suite to small businesses, medium-sized business, and large corporations. Given the reach of Google, the quality of OpenOffice, and the lure of free, it's a sure winner. Imagine if a version of it were available as a Web service from Google, combined with massive amounts of Google storage. Integrated with Google Docs, it would also allow online collaboration. For those who wanted more features, the full OpenOffice suite would be available as a client — supported by Google. wouldn't be at all surprised to see this happen.

We discussed Google Health's opening to the public earlier this week. RSnake mentions that Google has found a loophole allowing them to provide this service without having to follow HIPAA regulations, which, combined with Google's track record of having numerous flaws leading to private information disclosure, draws serious concern. Security researcher Nate McFeters of ZDNet's Zero-Day Security Blog also commented on the article, mentioning several past vulnerabilities: ownership of content issues, Google Docs theft, a cross-domain hole, Google XSS, and a Google Picasa protocol handler issue leading to the theft of user images.

Ozzie also spoke about the future of Microsoft's search technology, which will develop with or without Yahoo. There is a related interview at OStatic with several Microsoft employees about how they view and interact with the open source community. The head of Microsoft's global open source and Linux team is quoted saying: "The other thing I think is missing is implementation of a basic principle of economic fairness. Thousands of developers have put very hard work into building software used by millions of people and companies, yet only a fraction of these developers are rewarded financially.
