1sockchuck writes "Microsoft and Google have opened a new front in their battle for global domination: data center energy efficiency. Just weeks after Google published data on the extreme efficiency of its previously secret data centers, Microsoft says it has achieved similar results with shipping containers (despite Google's patent) packed with up to 2,500 servers. The geeky benchmark for the battle is Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), a green data-center metric advanced by The Green Grid. Microsoft says its containers tested at a PUE of 1.22, while Google reported an average PUE of 1.21 for its data centers, which apparently are also now using containers."

The information made available by Google about its data centers may be a little on the vague side, but what it does illustrate is how it employs strategies for reducing energy consumption and conserving other resources. A lot of it is probably what would be thought of as common sense, with practises such as carefully thought out fan placement and avoiding the use of graphics chips. Other measures go a little further, such as employing waste water to cool data centers and re-purposing any retired equipment. Google claims that it saves $30 per server/ per year by compared to its competitors by adopting these measures, as well as reducing the environmental impact of its data centers. Google got a lot of attention recently for the launch of Google Flu Trends, which looks at aggregate data on searches related to the flu, to see if it can act as something of an early warning system for where there are flu problems. It's an interesting use of the data, and it will be worth watching what else can be done with this sort of data over time. However, Ed Felten raises an interesting question: can Google Flu Trends be manipulated? The idea is that, right now, it may be accurate, but the very fact that people know Google is tracking this information, could create incentives to game that info -- in the same way people have tried gaming Google in other ways for years, using tricks such as Google bombing. While you might not think there would be that many reasons to manipulate Google Flu Trends, there could be reasons to do so.

As Google not-so-eagerly awaits the US Justice Department's word on whether or not it's violating antitrust laws, it appears that the fear of Google-as-a-monopoly is not just a domestic US issue. There are a bunch of headlines about how Russia's antitrust agency has rejected Google's purchase of an ad agency in that country. Technically, the claim is that Google didn't file the proper paperwork, but the agency made it clear that it's worried about Google becoming monopolistic. Of course, as with the Google-Yahoo deal, it's unclear what the "monopoly" is that's being dealt with here or how people are harmed. It seems like this might just be a general "must fear Google" position, than anything based on an actual problem.

An anonymous reader mentions Google Flu Trends, a newly unveiled initiative of Google.org, Google's philanthropic arm. Privacy is an important issue in data mining and knowledge discovery. This paper describes a specific privacy preserving data mining problem: Company C wants to collect data from its customers to form a data set for data mining purpose. For the data collection, C sends out a survey containing a set of questions; each customer needs to answer those questions and sends back the answers. However, because the survey contains sensitive questions, not every user feels comfortable to disclose his/her answers to those questions; how could one develop a method such that C cannot find out any customer's actual answers, while still being able to derive reasonably accurate data mining results? The paper proposes to use the randomized response techniques to conduct the data collection.

Borders has enabled Google Preview on their site. Google Preview, unveiled in September, is a widget-like tool that allows retailers or anyone handy with Web site code to embed a preview of 20% of any book in Google’s database onto their site. Borders joins Books-A-Million and the U.K. retailer Blackwell Bookshop in using the service. The deal between Google and its retail partners stipulates that retailers will enable Google Preview for any book being sold that is also available in Google’s database, in exchange for an enhanced version of the Preview software. The big advantage for retailers of Google Preview is that it allows consumers to brows books scanned by Google without leaving the retailer’s Web site. A lot of recent research has focused on the content-based dissemination of XML data. However, due to the heterogeneous data schemas used by different data publishers even for data in the same domain, an important challenge is how to efficiently and effectively disseminate relevant data to subscribers whose subscriptions might be specified based on schemas that are different from those used by the data publishers. This paper examines the options to resolve this schema heterogeneity problem in XML data dissemination, and proposes a novel paradigm that is based on data rewriting.
