Google launched Google Buzz, a new product that integrates with users' Gmail inboxes and lets them share web links, photos, videos, and more, and chat with people from their Gmail contacts list. Google is rolling out Buzz to all Gmail accounts over the next few days. It also plans to make Google Buzz available to businesses and schools using Google Apps, with added features for sharing within organisations. The Google Buzz version for mobiles brings a new feature to sharing information via internet-enabled PCs, namely geo-tagging. This enables users to select a place on Google Maps and attach it as location tag to posts, or read what others have posted about a specific place. The Buzz version for mobiles can be accessed at Buzz.google.com, using the Buzz layer on Google Maps for mobile, clicking the Buzz shortcut from Google.

The European Commission has launched an investigation into competition concerns at Google following complaints from three companies. The complaints from UK price comparison site Foundem, a French legal search engine called ejustice.fr and Microsoft's Ciao! from Bing centre on their rankings in Google's search engine. According to Google, which confirmed the notification from the EC, the Foundem complaint argues that Google's algorithms demote the site in search results because it's a vertical search engine and so a direct competitor to Google. Ejustice.fr's complaint seems to echo these concerns, Google said. On the third complaint, Google said that after Microsoft acquired Ciao! in 2008 (renaming it Ciao! from Bing) Google started receiving complaints about its standard terms and conditions.

Over the years, we've seen plenty of people get mad and sue Google over getting either dropped from Google's index, or simply ranked really low on certain searches. And, of course, for some there are always totally unsubstantiated conspiracy theories about Google purposely "punishing" a company or individual it doesn't like. To date, however, there's been no evidence at all that Google acts in such a capricious manner when it comes to rankings. If the company did so, and it ever came out, the hit to Google's reputation would be something fierce. It's even more ridiculous when you consider that all of the accusations of such personal attacks seem to come from tiny companies -- hardly any kind of threat to Google, anyway.

nikki4 writes to tell us that in giving some major improvement tweaks to its existing voice recognition tool for the Smartphone, Google is aiming for new translator software that will provide instant translation of foreign languages. "The company has already created an automatic system for translating text on computers, which is being honed by scanning millions of multi-lingual websites and documents. So far it covers 52 languages, adding Haitian Creole last week. Google also has a voice recognition system that enables phone users to conduct web searches by speaking commands into their phones rather than typing them in. Now it is working on combining the two technologies to produce software capable of understanding a caller’s voice and translating it into a synthetic equivalent in a foreign language.

So far at MIX 2010, a lot of new Windows Phone 7 Series features have been shown off. One of the most basic functions of a phone is the ability to actually use it as a phone. Joe Belfiore attempted to recieve a call during a demo, but instead had to settle for placing one. The call pops up over the current screen, dimming what's in the background. It's unclear, from what he showed, if you can continue what you're doing while on a phone call. He does note that when making phone calls, the name of the person is "hot." This allows you to tap someones name and select alternate ways to communicate with them.

Google is supposed to open a store to push third-party online business apps that integrate with its Google Apps, according to the Wall Street Journal. It's meant to help Google Apps make headway against Microsoft. It expects the independent developers to flesh out its feature set like Saleforce.com's AppExchange. The paper expects Google to overhaul its Solutions Marketplace site for that purpose and maybe liftoff next month. Google reportedly means to make the site accessible from inside Gmail and Google Docs and put the venture on a revenue-sharing basis. Like it needs the money.

Google's controversial acquisition of mobile ad company AdMob may just squeak by federal regulators who could block the deal, sources said. The Federal Trade Commission is investigating the $750 million stock acquisition, and in December asked Google for more information. But it is leaning towards approval, a source close to the process told The Post. "The review is going slowly," the source said, adding that the deal could be approved in April. This is taking place as European antitrust authorities have opened an unrelated inquiry into complaints about Google's tactics. Google, which has rolled out its own mobile operating system, Android, and mobile applications such as Google Sync and Google Voice in recent years, is looking to expand its mobile capabilities even further.
